hey, just joined this sight, my average is about 1min 5 secs.. and i use the original method if thats what it is called..

anyway, i use a few shortcuts, and do the r' d' r d using finger tricks, but when i see faster people solving, they all appear to be holding, and flicking it differently than i do. i was wondering if their were any places to learn how to hold, and flick a rubix cube..

also, i have a basic understanding of the f2l method, and was wondering if i should simply take the time to switch to that, and learn the shortcuts just for the top layer.

learn the friedrich f2l, 2 look OLL/PLL. then after your good with those move onto full PLL and OLL. the youtube videos by badmephisto are very very good on the freidrich and 2 looks. youtube badmephisto and go to his homepage

When you see faster people solving, they are most likely using Fridrich/CFOP.
Most CFOP algs have been optimized to use the right hand (wrist and index), and is therefore composed mostly of R and U turns, with the occasional F.

For example, R' D' R D, can be done as R' U' R U when you flip the cube over (cube rotation x2).

If you are using CFOP algs, just follow the following guidelines whenever you twist your cube, and you will "automagically" be doing fingertricks on your own:
- for R and L turns (R,R',R2,L,L',L2) grab the entire face, and use your wrist
- for U turns: use your right index finger (flick)
- for U' turns: use your left index (flick)
- for U2: combo the right index, followed by the right middle finger
- for F turns: use your right index
- for F': use your left index, or right thumb, depending on the current position of your hand

Try it.

im doing something similar to that, i do the same exept i do the F turns differently, and for R' D' R D, i use U' R' U R and solve for the left.. so i guess i need an explanation of how the F turns work because my index fingers are alway on the back of the cube..

Hmm, your index would be at the back of the cube after an R turn, and it would be on top and in front after an R' turn... For the algs I use... I hardly get F turns after R turns, F' thumbed-turns are more common after that... usually I get F turns after R'.

Strange, I never noticed that before. But yeah, try doing R' F and you'll see it fits nicely.

Anyway, it sounds like your fingertricking ability is just fine.
All that's left is to learn Fridrich.
I suggest intuitive F2L and 4-look OLL as well, same as the other guy.

so on the 4look OLL when you do the corner Permutation does the cross matter, or does it just need to be oriented?

I'm pretty sure bundat meant 4-look LAST LAYER, not just OLL, or else it's a stupid method and shouldn't be mentioend anyway.

Yes, the cross being built on the last layer is one of the steps, but we permute the cubies after orienting them, not before.
