My problem with a 4x4x4

So I have a problem with solving a 4x4x4. (I don't own one, use Gabbasoft) I solve it like I do a 5x5x5 but when I start to solve it like a 3x3x3 (edges paired up) I get something like this. I get F2L done and the top layer I cant make a cross. I can get up to 3 edge pairs oriented but not the last. So top cross wont work. Hope you guys can help.

This is the most common one: r2 B2 U2 l U2 r' U2 r U2 F2 r F2 l' B2 r2

Try breaking it down into 5 3-moves to memorize it.
