Move Counting

I've heard many people in the forums talking about how many moves their solves are and how many move a solve that they did was. I was just wondering how they did this? I thought of many ways and the only solutions that i could think of was that they scrambled the cube again with the same scramble and tried to replicate their previous solve.

Could somebody tell me if this is right or if there is another way that it's done?

They rescramble the cube with the same scramble, then just reconstruct how they solved it by doing the same moves they previously did, this time however they count/write down the solution.
