after sanding or filing... the plastic surfaces can become pretty rough. and i feel like its causing a lot of drag or friction... what do you guys do to get those surfaces smooth and all polished up again?

When I did the memory mod on my AV I used 250 grit sandpaper. The pieces were kinda rough, but I didn't notice any problems during solves. Just using it and doing solves on it made the pieces perfectly smooth.

i think if you sand it use a chisel it will'nt be so rough, but if you use a sand paper, please use the mid-soft one. and to clean it up just use toilet paper that the surface is enough rough but not to rough to clean the dust of the plastic or you may like to wash the entire cube. but i recommend you don't use jig a loo if you don't know how to lubricate the cube with special method, coz if you just spray it inside the cube it will harm the plastic and the cube rotation won't be smooth.

Newspaper can sand, so can a piece of notebook paper. Technically so can your finger. Haven't you ever noticed a smooth spot of plastic on your spacebar? I know a lot of laptops actually show this, along with the common keys pressed.

You could wet sand the rough areas. I'm betting though just a couple small squirts of CRC or Jig-A-Loo and giving the cube a good amount of scrambles and solves should take most of the roughness out for you.
