It is the largest rubik mosaic ever built in Hungary (single or double sided). Created for the 2017 swimming world championships held in Budapest.
The planned size of the mosaic was 37*54=1998 cubes but the actual size had to be 36*53=1908 since they made the frame smaller than expected.
Solving (scrambling):
- Ágoston Török (2 days)
- Dávid Balog (2 days)
- István Szepesi-Nagy (2 days)
- Bence Hervay (1 day)
- Hunor Mogyorósi (1 day)
- Norbert Héjja (1 day)
All the preparation took a few weeks, the actual building 2 days.
Since just a few percent of the possible color schemes are valid (solveable on a rubiks cube), we had to find the mage pair having the fewest/least (not literally) incorrect colors. For this we came up with a relatively complicated cost function and penalty system (pm or email me if interested), and we let out program run for days chewing on the few*10million image pairs we generated. You can see our best result on the video.
Im a bit disappointed it is not a world record considering how much extra work we had to put into the preparation and building compared to the current world record (video), and i guess the quality (visually) of our images are not even comparable... but who am i to judge...
