How can I put the cube into a <L2, R2, F, B, U, D> group optimally?
Ryan Heise says that this can be done in an average of 4.6 moves, but doing this is rather difficult if the there are more than 4 incorrect edges.

I do not know how many moves it takes me to do this right now, but I definitely do not average 4.6 moves.

I practice this a lot for pre-orient, and I essentially use only two techniques:

1) Put 4 edges to flip on L or R, and turn. They're oriented :-)
2) Do something like RUR'. R misorients 4 edges, displaces one of them, and reorients the others. The piece that was sent out (FR) and the piece that was drawn in (UB) were both flipped.

Sometimes, I put fewer flipped edges on R and L to have more convenient available flipped edges...

I'll do 5 examples from this week's 3x3x3 speed scrambles.

3x3x3
1. U' F R2 B F2 L' B R2 B' F L' D U2 L' R U' F2 L U2 R D' U' R2 B F'
Flipped: UF, FR, DL, DR
RFR' L'F2L
(Double 2-flip)

2. L2 B F2 U L' R D2 B2 F R' D L B2 L R2 B R F' L2 R2 F' L2 R2 B' U
Flipped: UR, UB, FR, FL, all of D
BR' L2DL
(Double 4-flip)

3. D2 U' R D2 U B D U' F' L2 R2 B F U2 L D' U' F' D2 U' L U L2 R2 F
Flipped: UF, UB, E-ring, DR, DB
UR' DL'
(Double 4-flip)

4. L R' B' R' B2 D' L R2 F' D2 U2 L2 R2 B2 F' D2 U2 B' L' R' D U B' U2 L'
Flipped: UF, UL, UB, FL, BL, DL
L'F RUR'
(4-flip, 2-flip)

5. R2 B2 F2 L R U2 B U' L' F D F D2 U F' U B F2 D' R U B' D2 U B
Flipped: UL, E-layer, DR, DF, DB
DL' BUR'
(Double 2-flip)

There's a solid 5-turn average. (6, 5, 4, 5, 5) :p
