Justin's progression thread // Sub 20 ao100 soon!? // #FTOforWCA

I have a ton of upcoming comps, no clue whether I'll be going to all of them though.

Hopefully I'll go to ottawa blindfolded, I really want to get a 3bld mean and try 4bld, 5bld, and multi. Maxim (aka applesauce) from the bld server made a list of goals for me, and it'll be a nice challenge trying to achieve all of them

Haha I saw those and was about to tell you a bunch got announced in Ontario. Also I saw sub 20 and 3bld and read them together 💀

I have made a list of goals for my next competition, which is this Saturday:

- sub 20 3x3 ao5
- 15 pr 3x3 single
- sub 2 single in bld
- mean in bld????
- bld podium
- sub 7 2x2 ao5 (the hardest goal here)

I am actually horrible at 2x2, the sub 7 ao5 will be difficult. Really hoping that I don't triple DNF for bld again, and a mean/podium would be really nice!

I am back from the competition! I did really well on my goals (except bld… we'll get to that later). Out of my goals, I accomplished the following:
- sub 20 3x3 ao5
- sub 16 pr 3x3 single
- sub 7 2x2 ao5 (the hardest goal here)

I unfortunately triple dnfed in bld, but there's always next time! There's the PBQ I mentioned earlier in November, but I still haven't signed up yet.

For 2x2, I got a sub 7 ao5 (5.61 with 3.87 fastest single). I don't care too much about 2x2, but still happy that I did decent!

For 3x3, I annihilated the sub-20 barrier. In round one, I got a 16. Then another 16, and another 16! After that, I got an 18 but then another 16. I was really consistent, no clue why to be honest. That gave me a 16.51 pr ao5 (old pr was 20.08). I also did an accidental xxcross on the first solve (I planned a xcross but didn't see it would actually be an xxcross). In second round, I started off with a bang! I got a 12.75, less than 0.2 seconds away from overall pb! It had an oll skip, and my F2L was really smooth; I barely paused. (I ended up getting a 19, 18, 15, and 21 afterwards which gave me a 17.77 average).

To be honest, if I told someone that I improved from a 16 second single and 20.08 second ao5 to a 12 second single and 16 second ao5 in three weeks, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't believe me. But I somehow did it, and it's official! Results for the comp will probably be posted sometime later today; they always go up really quickly for Canadian comps.

Overall, the competition was really fun, and I got PRs in everything! (except bld :/)

I was grinding FTO for a few hours yesterday, and broke my PB single by 20-30 seconds.

As well as a 1:48 ao50. My current goal is to average sub 1, and then I'll start trying to get a bronze ranking! I already know two look tcp, I just need to get faster in solves and memorize the colour scheme! I repeatedly mess up by making the colour scheme wrong, especially on N3C (next 3 centers, I have no clue whether that's the proper name or not)

Oh so it's been a year since I last posted here… oops.

I have not progressed significantly in the last year—I haven't been cubing much. I signed up for a competition in November so I am now motivated to practice as much as I can. I made a large cube order in November and haven't been using the new cubes that much other than learning how to solve them. These puzzles were:
  • Moyu GTS3M
  • Qiyi QiHeng S2 Megaminx (Magnetic)
  • Moyu AoSu V7 4x4 Double-Track (Magnetic, UV Coated)
  • YJ MGC Square-1
  • Dayan FTO Magnetic
  • Qiyi Clock 2024 Edition
  • Gan Mosaic Mini Cube Bundle (100 cubes)
The Moyu GTS3M is my new main for both 3x3 and 3BLD. The Qiheng is my first speedcube megaminx; my only other megaminx is a Mefferts megaminx that is very hard to use. The AoSo v7 replaces my RS4M, which has stress marks on a corner which makes it WCA illegal. The MGC is my first speedcube Square-1. I have another squan that I got years ago from amazon but it isn't magnetic and doesn't turn very well. The Dayan FTO replaces my Diansheng because the Diansheng has issues with spontaneous explosion. The Qiyi Clock is my first clock and I've been enjoying the event so far. Finally, the mosaic cube bundle isn't a wca puzzle but is lots of fun, I've made over 10 different patterns with the set so far.

My competition in November is Pickering Favourites Fall 2025. It has every event in the WCA that is not bld (🙁) or fmc. I can't compete in all of them though because it's a favourites comp—you can only choose four of your favourite events to compete in. I chose 2x2, 3x3, 4x4, and megaminx, but will likely change my events later, depending on how I'm doing in them all and which I feel that I will do best in. My plan to prepare for the competition is to practice all events and see what I'm averaging with them. Then I will switch the events I am registered for depending on whichever ones I am enjoying the most and doing the best at. For most events I think that I am at the stage where I can easily improve with enough practice and without learning any new methods, but I will probably learn algorithm sets for some events. My plan is to learn CLL for 2x2 so that I can use it at the competition instead of ortega.
