As title says. Memo was roughly 12 seconds and execution was about 23.
Scramble was r u' L' U B' R L B R B' R' L B' L' B' U' B L R U' B U' R' U' L B R'
Don't think it was lucky, but it definitely was easy. 3 out of 4 centres were correct, although it's normal for 1 or 2 to be anyway. Did it using a 3 cycle method I invented yesterday. Anyone know if this is the UWR? Speedcubing says it's 43.40 by Kenneth but someone must've done it faster..

P.S. My solution was (where r is L then a cube rotation, f is B with a cube rotation etc)
(Fix tips)
R' L R L R' L R L
R d R U' R' U d' R'
d' r' R U' R' U r d
= 24 moves.

Whoa look at his eyes when he starts scrambling. Paralyzing stare.

Only few people have cared to do this, and you're the fastest I know.

However at least for this, 2x2 and square-1, I think average would be much much more meaningful. The 2x2 is ridiculous, sometimes people can quickly see and execute a whole speedsolve solution and then get sub-10, but I doubt anyone can do that consistently. Since the pyraminx has even fewer states than the 2x2, it probably has the same problem (though I haven't heard of people doing this yet). The square-1 is similar because it's easy if your start state is close to cube shape and hard if not. I don't know anyone who can solve it consistently with a fully worked out method covering all cases in reasonable ways.

So congrats on that "possible unofficial UWR", please make it an "official UWR" (i.e., post to SCC), hope no speedsolver steals it with a speedsolve, and consider doing an average.

Heh, thanks for the feedback.

Stefan, the best average (3/5) I've got is about 54 seconds, so this one definately was a freak solve. I have gotten a few sub 50 solves (and 1 sub 40!) but never within 5 solves of each other. In fact, I have the 3 sub minute solves from the 54 second average so I could upload them but I'm not sure I will (nothing particularly interesting to watch).
However, seeing as I only invented my method yesterday, within a couple of weeks/months of practicing I'm confident I could average sub 40..

What's is your method?
I know quite a few 3 cycle algs, but every time, I forget exactly which stickers they affect. I'd like to try a speed BLD once I finish my FP method for speedsolving.

I had the previuos UWR and I was sure it was just a matter of time before someone broke it. Sub 30 is most possible, my UWR was really slow memo but exec in about 15.

I think the Pyraminx is harder to solve than a 2x2x2 even if it has lesser states and I can explain why; a 2x2x2 has only got one type of piece, the more of the same type of pice, the more states it becomes. Think of a "2x2x2" that has got 9 corners instead of 8, that would make 9*3 times as many states but it would not become much harder to BLD solve, it's just one more pice to memo and solve. If it has one corner less = 7 then it would become 8*3 = 24 times the states fewer and that is lesser than the Pyraminx. It has got (ignoring tips) two kinds of pices makeing it more complex to solve BLD than it looks when you just compare number of states. As another example you can take the 15-puzzle, it got 15 pices of the same type giving (I think) 15! / 2 states but it is really easy to solve.

I only know a single person who has solved the 15-puzzle blindfolded, though (Dror Vomberg). There are 16!/2 positions, btw (don't forget the gap).

But good point, I admit, fewer pieces creating more positions that way. The pyraminx does have 14 pieces, after all.

But how much harder do you think it is to blindsolve, and how much to speedblindsolve it? I still believe the top pyraminxers can at least occasionally see a full speedsolve right away, and would destroy a normal blindsolve time this way.

In normal BLD there are 6 edges and 4 corners to memo (the tips you can look at just before start and solve the first thing you do, no memo needed), for 2x2x2 it is (after orienting the puzzle so one corner is solved) only 7 corners. More is that for only corners you only need a single system for memo but for Px you need one for edges and one for corners this makes it a little more complex and somewhat a bit like 3x3x3 BLD where there are edges and corners to memo.

Speed, lucky scrambles of course but, else, yes, easy cases can be wery fast to recognise but far from all scrambles are easy, you have to track what's going on like when speed BLD 3x3x3 but of course with much lesser work to do. Tracking is slow so on average you may have to expect at least 30+ seconds even for really fast pyraminx solvers.

Yeah, in reply to the discussion about just speedblinding a Pyraminx and destroying this time: remember, I only made this system a few days ago and after time when I have the system down properly, there would be no pauses and I will learn more algorithms so I reckon I could compete with the 'speed blinder's anyway.

After saying this, an average might in fact be a good idea as there is always that one lucky scramble that is very easy to look ahead. On the 2x2x2 I once got a 14 second BLD solve just because there was a 2 move FL and OLL skip and I just worked out what the PLL would be. But, hopefully if someone did get a solve like that they wouldn't post it on Speedcubing (by the way mine is posted on Speedcubing now) as they clearly specify to not post lucky scrambles.

On the subject of how difficult it is, if someone asks me how hard it is to solve blindfolded I liken it to a 2x2x2, I'd say they are roughly equal. Memorisation is a lot easier on the Pyraminx but there are many incredibly simple methods for solving 2x2x2 blindfolded.

Fanwuq: My method is just very much like my TuRBo style for 3x3x3 edges I recently posted. Buffer is FL and I cycle FL --> FR --> FD and flip 2 edges accordingly (using R' L R L' and variants). It's pretty simple once you get the hang of it.

P.S. Got a 32 second solve yesterday, but it was hand scrambled and I didn't film it so I'm not going to count it (however, the scramble was harder than this one, it had 2 centres to twist not just 1)

I suspected that. I thought of that too, but I did not memorize which stickers get cycled in my methods. I'd do this someday, but right now, my interest is not in the Pyraminx... I cycle LU-->BU-->RU, so it's same idea, but different way of holding the pyraminx.
And do you use Sune+AUF to twist the corners?

Yeah, sune+AUF to twist corners.

Update on trying an average: I got a 44 second mean of 3 but one was a DNF by 2 flipped edges. I'll keep trying.

Also, just got 16.63 on the scramble b' l' U' R L U' B' U' R B' L U' L' R B R' B' R L' R L' R U R' U' B R
10 second memo, 6 second execution. Don't think I should count this, even though the scramble isn't actually lucky. On a complete whim I decided to use a different method, instead of using sunes to fix centres, just rotating them and using look ahead to see what happens to the edges. Highlight below to see my solution.
Centres: R L U B
Edges: R' L R L'

i speedblindsolve the pyraminx. i'm not sure if everytime i am just lucky with the last layer i "see" but i have no other method. the hardest bit i find is to remember the tips. i haven't tried again recently but maybe i should.

When I was a kid I read in the Pyraminx booklet that all solves should (not could) be done in 14 moves so I thought that was the goal. I got pretty good at it and could always see such a short solution after 10 to 30 seconds. I never executed blind though.

I have lost that skill entirely :( and only do 5 PyraMinx solves a week now.

At German Open 2008 Reiner Thomsen and I discussed PyraMinx the night before the competition and decided we would try to do that on easy solves. I succeeded twice, he succeeded once and got the NR. We didn't wear a blindfold, but I did close my eyes during execution (but opened them before stopping the timer)

And sometimes I do the same for the weekly competition nowadays.
