Is Speedcubing Now All About Money?

for some people it was always about money.

People buy whatever they want.

There are things you decide to buy with money and other things you decide to "buy" with time and effort.

For cubing I wouldn't spend money on courses and stuff like that, but I would think twice about courses on language learning, programming, 3d modeling or playing musical instruments.
Of course there are lots of free resources on the internet, but paying cheap for all resources gathered in one place is time saving. So one should consider about that and take their decision.

tru, with language courses, programming courses there is a reward however if ur good enough wihch can come in the form of extra pay, that cool factor and you dont need to be "top 10 in the world" in language learning to earn something out of it. but with cubing, even if ur top 100 in world ur barely making anything from it to make a suffiecient income. i think now courses and coacing wont be as valuable compared to 10 years in the future, where we could see cubers earning hundreds of thousands, if not millions, from a few comps alone

imo cubing is never gonna be the niche where u can actually make money even if u have cubing school/store, the market is too small, I know some details of contracts from big companies, and even if person has CR/WR, they pay absolutely nothing and if I gonna compare it to any bigger market we gonna cry, so cubing is much far from actually serious way to make money. Btw if I'd talk about me, I was 100 in the world in 2 events and in Europe i was top 100 in 6 events and I did absolutely zero profit from it

Even the european championship had around ≈5k€ prize fund, there's no such thing about money in cubing at all

Maybe for some, it is. For instance, here in Cuba is not a business. We have a great community but there are no cube stores nor access to Amazon and things like that. It has to be acquired outside of the country without any other reward but the cube itself.

Ye maybe 10 years was a bit too optimistic but I don't think comparing cubing to a sport like chess would be a bad shout. Sure chess has been refined and played for centuries, and competitively for around 70 years. but considering the amount money that's been earned professionally and online has grown alot, I can see cubing hitting that in my our lifetimes. I think playing around with the different events like adding a 3x3 standard where ur on a rubiks brand would be pretty cool, and commentators would find it much easier if the cubers were using smart cubes. However it's definitely up to the wca to push that agenda, not even companies can do that by themselves
