Indian Open 2008 Results

Congratulations to Bernett and Karthik! Nice blind solves, Karthik!

How close did Bernett's dad come on his DNFs? I feel a certain affinity towards John Louis because he's the only person in the world I've heard of who can solve a big cube blind and yet is actually slower than me on the 3x3x3 (sighted). :)

Thanks Mike.
John had just two mis-oriented corners. And the strange part is he refused to do the next two solves!
I am really happy that Indian open finally happened. As you can see from the results, there aren't many people in to cubing here, so atleast this competition will motivate people and help spread the word that cubing is definitely a big time sport.I hope the score sheets will look much better, the next we have a competition here.

Aww, so close! I bet he would have gotten one if he had tried again. Do you know how long he took? His current best time is 9:09 - I was wondering if he's gotten any faster.

I suspect you and Bernett will be great inspiration for the others who were there, so your next tournament will probably see some great improvements! Good luck with it!

Indian Open 2008

Yes Arnaud, we are also eager to meet you again. I am happy to know from Bernett that you are also training many youngsters. Excellent work!

Hello Mike, after Dutch Open - 2006, I had never practiced blindfolded(solved 7 out of 8 in multi bld). However, I tried my hand in Japan open-2007 (solved 4 out of 5 in multi-bld), world championship-2007(solved only 3 out of 10).

In Indian Open-2008, my intension was not to compete but to inspire youngsters.

Of late, I practiced 333 speed cubing a bit and my best avg is between 35 to 40 sec now.

I have no time to practice big cubes blindfolded.

Karthik, there are many people into cubing in India. But, unfortunately there are not many speed cubers.
Of course, you and Bernett are great inspiration for many in India now.
The lecture and demo we had on the eve of Indian Open-2008 might have given lots of insight to many cubers on "how to become a speed cuber".

Hi, John. Nice to communicate with you directly. Your speedcubing is starting to catch up to mine. My best average is a little under 30 seconds, but my second best average is still 31 seconds. So we're not that far apart.

I'm sure that your participation with Bernett and Karthik was very inspirational to the other cubers at the competition - the next one in India will probably see dramatic improvements from the others who were inspired there. Good luck with it - I bet the next competition there will be great.

Hi Mike, again it was around 9 min. I am glad, someone like you tracking me as well. Now I am inspired to begin practicing bld again! I tried my hand just to inspire the young competitors as there was not many in this category.
Everytime, I go wrong in bld, it is either a pair of corner misoriented or a pair of edges misoriented in every cube.

Although, it is first ever Indian Open, the total prize money for all the 6 events is Indian Rupees 30k (@ 800 USD).

The prize money was amazing. You guys really did the work with sponsors - nice job. I'm sure that will be motivating for future competitors as well!

I regret that you didn't try again at the Indian Open - I bet you would have gotten at least one if you had tried all 3. I'm curious what the split of your times is like - how long memorizing, how long solving? I would think a memory master like you would probably have much longer solve times than memorization times, but that's just a guess on my part - I wonder what the truth is. Also, what method do you use? Based on your comment about DNFs, I'm guessing you have separate permutation and orientation phases?

I use very simple method - T permutation method. I took 2 min 30 sec for memorisation and the rest 6 min 30 sec for solving.

I stopped after my first attempt because I had no intention to compete except to inspire the budduing competitors.

I made a wrong set up for the last 2 corners. Since 2003, I am not a serious memoriser because I am more into teaching after I turned as a professional memory trainer.

If you like to see my records plz have a look at the page
http://www.benacademy.com/demo/achievements.htm

However, I can memorise a cube in 20 to 30 sec, if I practice a bit regularly. Recently, I memorised a deck of 52 cards in 96 sec and 99 spoken number called out at the rate of 1 digit per sec in Manamma, Baharain.

I use visual images for memorising cubes, numbers, words, cards etc and journey system to store them in order.

Hello guys,
I am Karthik from IIT Kanpur, the place where the event was held. The competition inspired us competitors a lot.The IIT Kanpur people won the 4th , 5th and other positions.I came fifth in speed solve and 6th in OH for that matter .My time is around 40-55 seconds in speed solve and around 3.5 min for OH(which i never bothered to practice much before the event) .However the people here (including me) have been speedcubing seriously only for the past 2 months.I think we are pretty much happy with our progress.Mr.John taught us some great stuff in that lecture. We realised that it isn't all about madly speeding but also about proper technique, after that lecture i started to analyse my moves with more care and higher depth.I also learned a few algos ad tricks from Bernett!
