Just look and find all the pieces and plan ahead for the whole cross (then first f2l pair when you get good at that) and try to do it in as little moves as possible and a lot of practice. A ten second cross is normal unless your like sub 30 or something like that (then you could have a problem) but seeing as you average 1:40 it is probable fine your whole solve will get faster just by solving more also right now wouldn't be a bad idea to learn other methods to see if you like them, stuff like Roux, Petrus, and Heise method will help you better understand the cube and if you like them you can switch to them as your main method before you sub 15 or something with CFOP and have to start over. Two weeks ago I learnt Roux and started using it as my main method (still only 40-50 seconds) but without practicing my CFOP times went down from 22 ao12 to 20.5 just learning new tricks and more efficient ways to do things and forcing myself to turn the cube in ways I normally wouldn't using CFOP. Just a note while you are still slow don't get the worlds best cube a crappier cube will teach you better turning accuracy and help you in the long run. Also most of the questions you will have starting out are probable already answered there is a search function in the top right side of the website that will be very useful.
TL;DR Look ahead; practice lots of solves; look for optimal cross (fewest moves); learn other methods; use the search function.
