I'm aiming for sub-40 seconds on 3x3

Try to solve the cross + 1 F2L pair blindfolded
I don't think cross + 1 is recommended for a sub 40 solver. I think what you know now can take you to sub 30 and probably further, so the main thing right now should be doing solves(and slow solves) to get comfortable with F2L.

Yes I agree,

On the other hand, we do not want to induce bad habits.

It would be difficult to improve if the cuber never tries out xcross bld early on

XCross Bld should be reserved for prolly sub 25 at least. I think doing 1 look cross is enough for sub 40
I just learned intuitive F2L, and 2-look Oll and PLL. I average 7 seconds on cross, and I need improvement in F2L, OLL, and PLL. Please give me tips to improve.
for f2l, try to do some look ahead. it doesn't have to be a whole pair. just a corner or edge is fine. maybe also try to improve on your tps. I imagine that and effeciency might be slowing you down

It's an important habit, but overkill for this early on. I got to averaging sub-10 without often planning cross+1, though I don't particularly recommend waiting *that* long.
