I built a webcam timer so you don't need a stackmat

Do you own a stackmat?

  • Yes

  • No

  • I used to, but not anymore

The mobile version is out! Special thanks to everyone who have tried it out for me and gave me feedbacks. Also, super special thanks to @thecubicwizard!! We have a lot of good discussions and more features are coming! Including what @SpeedCubingLord said here

Can it identify misscrambles? That would be a great feature, even serving for WCA competitions, helping you know before the solve. Situations similar to Stojek's.

I'm a software engineer. I got back into cubing recently. My younger brother used to train pretty seriously, but he only ever used a keyboard timer. We never owned a stackmat growing up, so he never got to practice the real hands off motion you need at a comp.

That's what got me building swift. It's a free browser based timer. It uses your webcam and hand tracking to copy the WCA comp routine. No stackmat needed. No install. Nothing to download.

How it works:
  • Press space to start the 15s inspection countdown and get a new scramble
  • Put both hands palms down to get ready
  • Grab the cube to start the solve timer
  • Put both hands palms down again to stop the timer
It follows WCA rules where it makes sense. 15s inspection with voice cues at 8s and 12s. +2 at 15s. DNF at 17s. Everything runs in your browser, so nothing leaves your device.

Here is the link to the website. Here is the link to the demo on Google Drive. (This is actually my younger brother lool, I am too insecure to post my solve)

I'm still actively building this out. Would love feedback, especially on how the gesture detection feels when you try it. Happy to answer any questions about how it works too.

One more thing I'm working on. I keep seeing people share their solve recordings, so I figured a built in way to do that could help instead of using a separate screen recorder. I'm building that right now. Curious if people think that would actually be useful. Also, let me know if you would want a mobile version.
Insane concept and implementation!

Thanks a lot for this resource, I have already started using it to time my 3blind solves.

This means a lot coming from you, thank you! 🙏 I actually just added a 3x3 blindfold event not long ago too, so glad it's already useful for your 3BLD solves.

I'd genuinely love your feedback on it, would it be alright if I DM'd you?

Hey everyone, been a bit quiet here but wanted to drop an update since a lot has shipped since @abunickabhi post.
I added:
  • no-camera mode. You can now use swift with just spacebar like a regular keyboard timer.
  • A solve time progress graph, so you can actually see your improvement over time (and export it as an image)
  • You can now move a solve to a different session if it landed in the wrong one
  • Recording gallery got a real overhaul, proper browse/delete/download, plus fixed a couple of bugs where it rendered wrong on desktop
  • Added a confirmation before clearing a session (no more accidental wipes, learned that one the hard way)
Thanks again to everyone who's tested, reported bugs, and given feedback. This thread genuinely shaped a lot of what got built. Big shout out to @thecubicwizard and @-Cube Kid- and the discord community

Here are some sneak peeks: (one of them is mine, I know I am a slow cuber haha... Trying to catch up!)

Also, I'm working on a single player training playground for swift. Here's what I've got in mind so far:
  • Daily scramble: same scramble for everyone each day, so you can compare your time against friends or just track how you'd do on a shared scramble
  • Race your PB: solve against a ghost of your own personal best, like ghost mode in racing games
  • OLL/PLL trainer: you get a random alg, execute it on your cube, then show it to the camera and swift verifies you did it correctly
Still early on the last one especially (camera-based alg verification is a fun problem), but wanted to share the direction and see what people think.
Please let me know if you have any interesting single player mode you would wanna see!

Quick update, the training playground I mentioned a while back is live! Two of the four modes are in.

Ghost racing lets you race your own PB. You get a live countdown to your best time while you're still solving, so you know if you're ahead or behind before you stop. Feels very different from just seeing the number afterwards.

Daily scramble is one scramble a day, same one for everyone, with a streak if you keep coming back.

The alg trainer with camera verification and 1v1 are still the one I haven't cracked yet, that's next. I also spent way too long building a 3D arcade to pick between the modes, which was probably not the correct order of operations lol.

Would love to hear how ghost racing feels for anyone who tries it! Thanks in advance for any feedbacks!! Again special thanks to @-Cube Kid- for all the feedbacks!

AWSOME!!! I would prefer that the alg lab comes out next, but that's just my opinion. This is getting to be so cool!
