[Help Thread] Hoya Discussion

Yeah, still planning it, sorry! I got a 10x10 for Christmas and was completely distracted for a few days. My PB, BTW, is now 41:14.09. Of course I only timed it once so far :-)

anyway... I should have time tomorrow or the next day.

Haha no problem. I'm still finding shortcuts, some of them are rather obvious; if you have a dedge made on DF, do rU'r'. I used to pair them the tedious way until I discovered that.
Have fun with the 10x10 :)

Okey doke... finally. There's not much to it. Just some ideas for efficient Cross Edge pairing when the unsolved piece is in an F2L slot.

Good video, thanks for making it. Most tricks I discovered by myself, however the sledgehammer thing I never thought about, so that's awesome.
Another thing you could incorporate is making the pair on U, doing rU'r' for example.

Anyway, thanks for making the video!

Niiice. I want a 8x8/9x9/10x10.. Someday, am I right? :)
Well, 10x10 PB's aside (which that sounds fast, nice job! Is the cube stable? get any pops?)
I actually have been using Hoya for 6x6 and 7x7 now

Chris/Chree, that's actually really helpful. I thought it was going to be a bunch of things I "already knew" about Hoya. I got so much out of that.

Hah thanks! I feel a little bad though, it was pretty lucky.. :/ I still avg around 1:20 - 1:30

Hah... hey... a PB is a PB. I know some poeple that don't count lucky solves as PBs, but if I got that in competition, I'm SURE I would let it stand :) And I know this because I actually got a really lucky solve at my first comp that stood as my overall PB for 3 months.

Glad it helped! There really isn't much else special that I do during Hoya solves. In fact, a lot of the things I showed in that video I need to do more often. There are other cases, like when the unsolved dedge in the D layer, that I have yet to square away. I'll keep playing around and maybe make a part 2 :)

As for the 10x10 solve? I was kinda disappointed that I didn't get it in under 40 minutes, but it was only my first timed solve. Maybe I should attempt a Hoya10 solve ;-)

You're right :)

I actually broke my avg5 and avg12 PBs today as well, I'm finally getting somewhere with 4x4 haha. But I need to do a lot of slow solves and really learn those edge cases. Right now, I'm still doing them really inefficient because of me pressuring myself while timing. Getting comfortable with that step should bring my times down even more I'd say :)
Really glad I decided to make this thread.

Slow solves/untimed solves do help a lot... but eventually you have to force yourself to do the new things you just learned during timed solves as well. That does mean your times will suffer at first until it sinks in. And that's OK! Once you get more used to using new/better techniques under pressure, you'll start to improve again.

I've been playing around with more places the unsolved piece can be. I think I'll make a very short Part 2 when I get home tonight.

That's true, that's how I learn other things as well.
I just did an avg leaving out the 3x3 stage, and I'm usually around 50-55. I also tried yau again just for fun and I average about the same. Only problem is that I now suck even more using yau, so I wonder how fast I would be now if I was as "good" as I was before :/

Thanks Chree!

I'd love to also make video, there's certain tips and tricks I'd have to share. Unfortunately I have no way of getting camera footage on my computer :/
I'll probably buy a new cam anyway, maybe then I'll film some stuff, in case it's still a demand :)

Edit: Awesome trick I discovered: rUr'FrUr'

If you have a smart phone with a camera and the YouTube app... you can share it that way. I recorded this using my phone (hence the annoying refocusing it does ever few seconds) and then just uploaded it from there.

Also, this is my camera stand. I made it out of Lego.

Nevermind, I just bought a camcorder and a tripod today ;)
Maybe I'll have some time tomorrow to record a video.

Robert, it looks to ME (from what I watc of his solves) that it's generally White + Orange, then red+green, but don't take it from me.

Wow Chree! There are still some cases I need but this actually dropped some stuff down by about 4 seconds, which is a lot in my opinion. WOOT!

Aaron pointed this out to me a while ago as well... he seems to do Adjacent Centers.

It doesn't have to be in the order he does it either... can be done semi-color neutral, I suppose. Those first 4 adjacent centers only have to Include the cross color and Exclude the color opposite cross.

I usually do it the LoPrete way: 2 opposite centers, either RO or BG, then white on U face, then whatever color belongs on F. My F4C suck. This is def an area needing a lot of improvement for me.
