How to track 1st corner when doing cross?

How do you track the 1st corner piece or corner-edge pair or even do X-cross stuff when doing a cross?

Seems impossible, whenever I tried to track the piece, it disappeared when I finished forming the cross :fp. It caused panic and often made me lose rhythm more than if I don't track it at all.

How often is it possible to track the 1st corner successfully?

So you always want to make sure a corner piece go to the top? Or you don't care whether it ends up top or bottom?
