How old were you when you started cubing?

It was about four months before I turned 15, which I am now. I solved a cube in February, and when I saw videos of sub-minute guys, I became a speedcuber, because the bus became my practice vehicle (literally). Now I'm faster than the people who taught me (antidote knows this)

I always liked puzzles and cubes. Although I don't recall such a young age, the mother of my friend told me I "always used to have a cube in my pocket". That might be a lie.

I also went to a massive toy store with my mother when I was about 7/8 and she said you can have anything you like (within reason). I chose this stupid plastic Aladdin set and a magic. I broke the magic later that day and went back the next day... they replaced it... :P I also had a clock when I was younger which I really liked, even though I had no idea what to do with it.

I've been actively speedcubing for like 2.5 years approximately.

I always wanted to know how to solve the rubik's cube since I was pretty young. I just couldn't figure it out so I searched for a guide on the internet when I was like 9 but I couldn't find anything I could understand.

I found a rubik's cube later on when I was 11 and I still couldn't figure it out, so once again I searched for a tutorial on the internet. And I came across Dan Brown's tutorial :)

When I got pretty good at that, I found the Fridrich method. It was pretty hard to find good tutorials for it until I found badmephisto's.

And from then.. Get DIYs, Join the Forums, Get other puzzles, Learn algs, Practice, Practice, Practice :)

Now Im 12 years old and sub 35 :D

I think I started in 1980 when I was 26. I started timing myself back then, bringing my time down to 1:40 and then to about 1 minute. I didn't do much with the cube for about 27 years until I read at Jessica Fridrich's site (almost 2 years ago) that anyone can do it in 17 seconds. That started me back into speed cubing. I learned 2 look OLL and 1 look PLL and now I average 41 seconds. I hope to eventually average under 30 seconds. I will be 55 years old at the end of this year.

Actually at age 11 in 1981. My parents brought the cube and two solution books to aid me solving one. But I could not solve the cube at all. Tried again in April 2009 and solved it for the very first time. One of the two books I used in 1981 was bought again grom Ebay and used this time to solve the cube. Reason for failure in 1981 was confusing D' for D and D for D'.

Today my Ebay ordered 1980's knockoff 3x3 Rubik's cube from Taiwan arrived. Solved it 9 times already. I can tell it is from the 1980's by the old color scheme.

Color scheme for knockoff 3x3 Rubik's Cube (1980's)
Front: Red
Left: Yellow
Right: White
Back: Orange
Top: Blue
Bottom: Green

Color scheme for modern 3x3 cubes (3x3 black Ghost Hand example):
Front: Red
Left: White
Right: Yellow
Back: Orange
Top: Blue
Bottom: Green

I got my first cube in 1980 when I was 10. It took me six months to figure out how to solve it (I was still 10 at that time). I didn't call myself a speedcuber then because the world hadn't been invented yet :D. But I definitely wanted to solve it again and again, faster and faster. I stopped in 1982 because I lost interest in it, and came back to speedcubing in early 2008.

I was 12 when I learned solve the cube. Now I am 12. I got serious when I was twelve, and I discovered this site when I was twelve.

13, though I only just started, so I'm still 13. Faz's age. And he's pro compared to me. Well, not just compared to me...

And what's your point? As long as someone isn't really small (like 5) or really really old, age doesn't matter much when it comes to cubing. Do you think that because Breandan is 17 and he's the world champion that every other 17 year old cuber sucks? If you really think age is all that matters, then because of this girl, you fail at cubing.

Sorry if that sounds a bit harsh, but I've had this discussion many times before and there are fast younger cubers and some fast older ones. Age (for the most part) isn't important, especially when it comes to teenage years.

Young: Durben, Mats, Jokey, Justin, and many more.
Old: Depends on how old you consider old to be and how fast you consider fast to be.

Regardless of age, if you practice and catch up to Feliks, I'll be very impressed. ;)
