How long?

lol, i prob do 4-50 solves a day, depending on how bored I am, i get mainly around well..
heres 5 solves...
31.81
48.30
38.46
47.71
43.52
avrage:41.9
i've been cubing since about this time in june, so...about 3 months :)
another thing to remember, im only 12 years old and my fingers are stubby and short :*(

im not that great but ive only been doin it for about a month probly not even a month
-------------------------
3x3x3 single best - 79.65
3x3x3 average - 97.90

im still tryin to break the minute barrier. i was only doing 2 and a half minutes then i lubed my cube and learned a few finger tricks and it dropped my time by over a minute.... just need to work on my speed now

gilles roux defines on his site that speedcubing begins at times below 45 seconds...so i guess that's his definition of a pro...

i'm a beginner now with averages over 1 minute, but i think everyone can reach averages of 25 seconds....below that you have to be really good. so i would call a pro someone with times below 25seconds...

By definition, their is no person that can live off cubing, so the word "pro" doesn't apply to cubers.

But if you mean pro by the slang definition, then I would say sub 15, as that is considered world class.

I've been on and off for the last year and a half, but my average is still only around 35 seconds on a good day. My current "goal" is a consistent sub-30 average, but I'm not really doing much work towards that goal.

i am 14 and have been at this for a little over 3 months now and my best solve is 53.63 seconds i am just trying to learn the F2L now

Did the DIY improve your times alot?
It depends, I think it is a common misconception that your times will drop dramatically. If you are at 2 minutes and you buy a DIY, then maybe your times will drop, because it is more than likely to be smoother than a store cube that ahs not been worn in much. If you are at 30s, you will probably not drop that many seconds.

If you use the word 'pro' meaning 'the best', 'highly ranked' or 'extremely good' at something then usually they are yes. To be a speedcuber you don't have to be able to solve the cube in sub20, though that's one of the aims in speedcubing, a speedcuber is just someone who aims to solve the cube as fast as they can.

You could say they are pro and speedcubing in one fashion, but it's not really a job/profession, it's more of a hobby/skill.

Actually, we use the word "pro" in French for a very skillful person ("un pro du rubik's cube"). I don't think this is a proper translation in English.
I also think that the time needed to become good/very good at cubing will depend on many parameters (are you naturally good / are you considering cubing as a minor hobby / are you going to spend all your days with your cube / have you a lot of friends who can show you a lot of tips...).
If you are seriously cubing I would say it would take some months to get under 40 seconds and some more months to get under 30 seconds.
Times someone needs to do to be considered as a "beginner/good/very good/excellent" are quite decreasing (22.95 was a world record in 1982 and today it would be a bad time for so many people...). Today, I think sub20 is needed to be considered as a very good cuber :)

i'd label anyone with sub20 average a pro...
getting to sub30 for me was 2 months, and sub20 4 months. It's nice and exponential :) sub10 in 8 months? doubt it :P

I'd also say people with an average of sub20 are 'pro'

It took me about a month and a half to get 25(lucky) seconds and a few days later to get 23.77(lucky)

It's taken me two months (to this date) to get an average of 31.xx and a pb of 27.78(non lucky)
