How long did it take for you to get sub 20 seconds?

Why are some people so much faster than others. I see some who say they took a few months and others at least a year.
Anyone care to explain this to me?

Some people practice 9 hours a day and get sub 20 in 3 months.

Some people practice 2 hours a week, and take 2 years.

Obviously some people practise more than others, but in some cases there may be physical factors such as slower hands due to older age, or faster hands due to other pastimes like piano playing.

I practice 5-10 minutes per day.
Sub-20 in 3-4 months...

Really? 5-10 minutes per day, 90-120 days? That's a MAXIMUM of 1200 minutes, or 20 hours of cubing. Even if you started cubing at 20 seconds per solve, and could scramble and inspect in 10 seconds, that's a maximum of 2 solves per minute, or 2400 solves. And that's based on the upper limits of both of your estimates, and you solving in 20 seconds (on average) from the start. Far more likely, based on the figures given, that you'd have done between 800-1200 solves in that amount of time.

If those figures are accurate, that's the most incredible cubing accomplishment, and by a light year the fastest improvement, that I've ever heard of.

Is it possible, just possible, that you cube for > 5-10 minutes a day?

He does now. Maybe he practiced for hours a day when he started.

In which case his post should have read 'i achieved sub 20 in 3-4 months with several hours practice per day, and currently only cube for 5-10 minutes a day'.

Given the context of the thread, his post clearly implies that he achieved sub 20 in 3-4 months with less than 10 minutes a day practice which, if you'll pardon my French, is absolute excrement of a male cow!

Dude just saying its not that much of an achievement. I was sub 20 after 2 months with about, hmm, less than an hour per day. I spent most of my time learning algs. And practicing f2l. It's not that amazing. To sub 20 you only need about 5tps and reasonable look ahead, not perfect, reasonable.

I have godawful lookahead, but that's neither here nor there! :-P

An hour a day for 2 months is 3600 minutes. This guy is claiming to have reached sub 20 in between 450 and 1200 minutes. This is between 1/8 and 1/3 of the time it took you.

Knowing how intelligent you are, I'd say that's quite an achievement! All I'm saying is that I strongly doubt the accuracy of his statement.

i cube quite a lot per day
but its usually while i'm watching a movie and solving it sorta with one eye lol.
i average 25-26.
and been cubing 7 months.do you guys think that that counts as practise.
the time i actually do averages and focus on the cube is less than half an hour a day.

he might have been exaggerating but its no big deal getting sub 20 in 3-4 months with little practice. As long as your not wasting your time and practicing the right stuff.

I didnt practice for an hour everyday, i probably do about 4 hours per week, which add up to 4x60x8=1920 mins.
He claimed to do 10 mins, lets assume that he understated that and actually do 20-30, and only practice 5 out of 7 days in a week. Thats 25x5x3.5x4=1750mins. Remember that he might put in an ao50 or ao100 session now and then.

But I do agree, 5-10mins does sound very understated.

Also dude practice look ahead! Its the only thing holding you back by the sound of it!

In other words - "lets assume he was massively understating the time he spent cubing, and that he actually spent between 4 and 6 times as much as he suggested"? :p

OMG I know, it's so annoying. The last 3 months I've barely cubed at all. I cube maybe 30 mins a day, 4 days a week (lunchbreaks at work). At the weekend I'll occasionally pick up a cube and idly solve it for 5 minutes, but I don't do any ACTUAL practice, ever.

To say lookahead is the only thing holding me back would also be to ignore my hideous cross. Sometimes I'm at over 5 seconds after cross. For awkward crosses, I still have to watch cross edges while I'm solving, so zero lookahead into F2L-1.

If I dedicated some time to BLD cross practice, and focussing on lookahead, I reckon I'd be around 15/16 seconds immediately. I'm quite proud that I've got to 19ish without either, as it means I've got a massive margin for improvement by doing two really basic things. I think I could save on average 2 seconds per solve just by tidying up my cross, and probably the same with a bit of lookahead... now I just need to find the time to practice!!!

Achievement is subjective. Some people can get sub-20 in a few hours and for others it takes many months even with hours per day of practice. I can't even get 5tps on PLL drills after a year. Assuming that everyone has similar potential is really pretty dumb.

I never said everyone had same potential, just that his claim isnt as ridiculous as pip made it sound.
