How long did it take for you to get sub 20 seconds?

i am cubing since september 2012 and im on a 19 second average, often sub 19. sometimes even sub 17 lol. idk how long it took to get sub 20 my first sub 20 single happened a couple of months ago, but there were parts this year where i wasnt really into cubing somehow, then i got back, then i stopped caring, then i got back into it blablabla. so i could have been on a sub 20 average faster.

Interesting question - first sub 20 single was after about 2 months, first Ao5 after about 4 months, first ao12 about 6 months, first ao50 about 9 months. Would've been much quicker, but I only cube for about 45 mins a day, and not at all on weekends.

It's my 1st cubiversary today, and my last 6 ao50s have all been sub 20. So it depends how you classify 'being' sub xx. Personally, I'd only just now consider myself sub 20, as my global average is about 19.5. I regularly get 17 or 18 second ao12s, but I'm a long way from being sub 18.

There's been posts in the past about how to calculate when you're sub xx mathematically, but I think it's far easier than that - I used to be ecstatic when I got a sub 20 single, now even 20.00 is a disappointment. IMHO when you start being annoyed by single solves that are sup xx, it's a pretty good indicator that you're sub xx.

Hehe, took me one year to get sub-20. I was sub-30 for about 7 months... Then suddenly, on the anniversary of cubing, I reached the sub-20 level. Not only that. I didn't just reach sub-20, I reached sub-15 in the same month. I have no idea what happened.
Oh wait, I do.
I discovered lookahead.

Now I average around 11-12 seconds.
*cough*lookahead*cough*

I used beginner/intermediate Petrus for 6 years. My best was 25.xx, and I generally averaged 35 seconds.

A year ago I switched to CFOP. Had my first sub 20 single after 4 or 5 months. My first sub 20 Ao5 after 6 or 7 months. My first Ao12 after 8 or 9 months.

Lately, about half of my solves are sub 20, with good days and bad days.

Just last week I had an Ao90 19.98, but then blew it for the last 10 solves and the whole Ao100 ended 20.11. I'm at about the 1 year mark with CFOP.

Sub 20 took about a year, then another year for sub 15 then another year for sub 12.
Dont quite remember how much I was cubing in those time periods but probably not very often.

damn you guys are fast learners!
i cube about half an hour to an hour about 4-5 days a week, and i got my first sub 20 single today after roughly 7 months of cubing
also is any of your guys' progress very un linear.
like i used to average 35 seconds like 1 and a half month ago,and then in one day i started getting sub 30 singles and averages.
it was like i instantly learned something new about cubing that got me faster.
its kinda weird

To get sub-20? My first sub-20 happened like 2 months after cubing, but my first proper averages didn't sart hitting sub-20 until 3 months of cubing, which was mid October.
