How fast for competitions?

Apparently, some people with times over 8:00 have gone, so...

My friend came to watch my first competition (San Francisco Open 2009), and his mother realized that she was able to solve it 12 years ago, and hadn't touched it for 12 years.

So, she signed up for the competition that same day, and she thought she would get time to practice before she got called up to compete. Turns out she was the first person to compete. After 10 minutes, of course, they disqualified her. I went and looked at how far she had gotten. She was a three-cycle off.

Not bad for not touching one for 12 years.

I would say as long as you can solve reliably in under 10 minutes (and thus the Stackmat won't shut off on you) then you will have an absolute blast at the competition. Even if you can't solve in under 10 minutes reliably, but enjoy puzzles, I think you would enjoy it. I mean the general you here, not necessarily just the OP.

From what i've read in this thread. if you turn up expecting to come last with a smile you'll enjoy yourself and maybe be surprised when you dont come last.
