How Can I Get Sub 40

To answer the question.

Practice.

Last Monday, I started using Roux. My first a5:

44.16
57.35
1:23.10
56.15
1:44.67
average: 1:09.08

Today's a5:

Average: 35.09
Standard Deviation: 0.34
Best Time: 29.04
Worst Time: 37.89
Individual Times:
1. 35.25 R U2 B2 F U2 B F' D U2 B2 F' D2 R U' L2 B' F2 U2 R2 U L D' U2 B F2
2. (29.04) B2 U' B2 F R2 F U' B2 L2 R F2 L R D' R' D B R' U2 B U' B D2 L2 D
3. 34.62 B F2 D' L D' U2 F' L R' F2 L D2 U2 L2 R2 B2 L' D2 U' B L' R' D2 B' F2
4. (37.89) B D' U' B D' U L D2 U' B' F' D' U2 L U2 L F2 R2 U2 L F' D2 U2 L R
5. 35.41 D' U2 F' U B' L2 D' U2 F D L D' B' U L2 D R2 B F D2 F2 U2 F' L2 R2

The way I had gotten sub 40 was I gotten a speed cube. I then instantly dropped to sub 40. Though try practicing f2l as that seems to take a while looking ahead and practice your LL algorithms to where you can get it about 5 secs and under.

I average about 49-51 seconds. How can I get sub-40 please?

Do I just practise or what? Will I magically get faster eventually?

As faz says, "just practice." The rate at which you improve is directly correlated to how many solves you do. People have gotten sub40 with LBL, plain ol' F2L can get you sub 40 pretty easy.

This is what I was hoping. I'll just keep grinding out solves till I peak, then maybe learn some better F2L algs, and full PLL.

Don't learn F2L algs. Figure out a solution for all cases yourself. They will become fluent by using them a lot. Then later (like, a lot later), you could learn some algs for difficult cases.
Sounds like good advice. I am just doing F2L insitinctively at the moment.

However, I have to bring everything up to the top layer before I can make the pairs, which seems slow.

Check this out:
Scramble: R U' R' U F' U F

This pair can be solved with y U L' U' L (followed by the insertion of your choice)

Look for stuff like that. If both pieces are not in the u layer, bring one of them up, because if at least one is up there there is always a fast way to pair them.

Another neat case is (R U R' U')x3 which is both the scramble and solution.
