I cant seem to find any silicone spray in any of the stores I'v been to. The sales people dont even know what im talking about when I ask for it. My question is : What is the best substitute to the silicone spray? Maybe something more common or household. When I ask about what other types of lubricants they have, all they show me are the sex lubes. I know it sounds funny, but would that work aswell?

Hardware stores shouldn't carry KY jelly. Sounds like you're just checking the wrong places. Where do you live? Are you trying hardware stores? Maybe try a walmart. I have trouble finding places that don't have either CRC or Jig-a-loo.

I hear vegetable oil is alright. But just go to a hardware store and find crc of jig-a-loo or something similar. Check previous threads for lists of acceptable lubricants. Almost every hardware store will have something (though where I live all anyone has is liquid wrench).

Don't ever use an oil-based lubricant. Silicone is the way to go, but if you don't have that, powdered graphite works OK.
In fact, silicone spray is oil based also...

Oil doesn't affect plastic in any way as far as I know. Just don't get anything with petroleum (and even that is used for silicone spreay, just evaporates quickly... that's the reason why you should disassemble the cube before lubing rather then spray in and work around...)

Good point, but I think there's something different about the oil that makes it not corrupt plastics.

As for the petroleum jelly IN the silicone, you should be using 100% silicone, which doesn't have any.

It doesn't have petroleum jelly in silicone spray... just petroleum

That's the stuff that makes jig-a-loo melt cubes if you spray it in and leave it ;)

You can't have 100% silicone in a spray I believe

If I recall correctly, the Cube Lube that Rubik's sells is actually a floor wax product from SC Johnson (you're supposed to quote that when you contact the local Poison Control center), although I don't recommend it. Can't remember the exact name of it off hand, however.

This might be an urban legend that I heard long ago. Someone else disputed that it is not wax but really is silicone in liquid. Instructions say something like "the wet silicone will seep into the plastic". (Maybe that liquid has some wax in it too?)
