Hey fellow cubers. I'm Tim from Durban, South Africa.

I've been casually speedcubing for 2 years now, but no local competitions here unfortunately (they're only in Johannesburg and Cape Town). Instead I've managed to get some of my coworkers interested and we have races here at work. For the time being I'm still the fastest here (best 23.46, typically low to mid 30's) but the others are steadily catching up.

Meanwhile I've recently got my first 4x4 and Megaminx so trying to get decent at those as well. I joined the site primarily for the forum's weekly competitions and am hoping that will give me an incentive to keep pushing myself to get better across all these cube types.

Hey Theos

Not sure if you know about the FaceBook group Africa Cubing Association ... https://www.facebook.com/groups/speedcube.southafrica

Check it out ...

As for competitions, unfortunately they have only been held in JHB and Cape Town and even those have been quite infrequent. Last year in Cape Town we only had 2. Looks like we will only have 2 this year again. One of the biggest issues for competitions is sponsorship and venues. I know a bunch of guys from Durban have made the mission up to JHB for Nationals last year. Perhaps with Nationals coming up at the end of the year you could car-pool with a few of the other guys to get to go to the competition.

Hey Tim. Awesome to see more South Africans here. Its also awesome that you're getting others interested and having races at work - that's where competitions start.

I think there's quite a bit of interest in an official Durban competition, but none of the cubers I've spoken to so far are in a position to organise one. If you do want an official competition there, let me know. I'm a candidate delegate for the WCA and although I live in Johannesburg, I wouldn't mind an excuse to drive to Durban for a weekend to make a competition happen.

Hi. I'm from South Africa too (Jo'burg)!!!

My son and I are (as pocket money for him) thinking about starting a custom sticker business from Jo'burg. Do you think there's a market? The local guys only sell generic stickers.

I'd be interested as I replace the stickers on all my cubes to shades that I prefer. I've been buying mine from TheCubicle, however they usually take around a month to arrive and I'm paying is US $ which can be quite pricey depending on the exchange rate at the time.

Your first local competition will be on 15 July 2017. It would be awesome if you and your coworkers could make it. More details and registration here:

Thanks AlphaSheep. Really enjoyed the chance to participate in my first competition. Was a bit rusty but even so managed a 5x5 single PB

Invited the coworkers; I think most were a bit intimidated by the idea of competition, but there was at least one of them that seemed pretty keen for the next competition in Durban.

For me, I'll keep an eye out for competitions in Jhb and CT and see if I can't arrange some travel to coincide with them.
