I wouldn't believe that for a second. Nobody takes a year to get to a minute, if they practice frequently.

I've been studying the Fridrich Method for a few days now so I haven't really been speedcubing but I got a very lucky 47 sec solve earlier today! (OLL & PLL Skip) I'm learning as much as I can and my goal for now is a 45 second average of 5 solve (Currently I'm usually at 0:50 - 1:00)

Yeah I'm an Icelandic cuber also living currently in Finland. The cubing community in Iceland is close to none. Maybe just a couple of friends from different places that talk to each other but that is close to it.
