Hi, I am 41 years old and started cubing last year. I was at a store where I saw the cube and decided to buy one for my daughter out of fun (no one I knew can solve the cube). It was toy cube and had trouble even turning without locking. I took to the net to explore the methods. With the beginner method I was able to solve it in eight minutes for the first time in my life, all the while looking at the diagrams and algorithms. I felt very good and that feeling kept me going further to F2L and subsequently 2-Look OLL/PLL. Now I average about 46 seconds. I am not an avid cuber and do not intend to compete, but I am impressed by those that solve within 20 seconds. I hope to be able to do that before 50.
And yes, after the toy cube, I got a Rubiks not long after that but was disappointed with it. Then I managed to find an online store jpearly.com (Malaysia) that sells better cubes. I bought two from them; a Dayan ZanChi (stickerless) and a Dayan GuHong V2 (stickerless). The ZanChi was really nice and my time improved. I know it is the cuber not the cube, but in my case a Rubiks and a ZanChi make a lot of difference. I am now in the process of acquiring more cubes (mostly for experience and collection purposes) and I will use the forums here to help me choose besides tips to improve my time. Thanks!
