Hi, I am 41 years old and started cubing last year. I was at a store where I saw the cube and decided to buy one for my daughter out of fun (no one I knew can solve the cube). It was toy cube and had trouble even turning without locking. I took to the net to explore the methods. With the beginner method I was able to solve it in eight minutes for the first time in my life, all the while looking at the diagrams and algorithms. I felt very good and that feeling kept me going further to F2L and subsequently 2-Look OLL/PLL. Now I average about 46 seconds. I am not an avid cuber and do not intend to compete, but I am impressed by those that solve within 20 seconds. I hope to be able to do that before 50.

And yes, after the toy cube, I got a Rubiks not long after that but was disappointed with it. Then I managed to find an online store jpearly.com (Malaysia) that sells better cubes. I bought two from them; a Dayan ZanChi (stickerless) and a Dayan GuHong V2 (stickerless). The ZanChi was really nice and my time improved. I know it is the cuber not the cube, but in my case a Rubiks and a ZanChi make a lot of difference. I am now in the process of acquiring more cubes (mostly for experience and collection purposes) and I will use the forums here to help me choose besides tips to improve my time. Thanks!

Thanks deedubb. I see that you are on Roux method. Is that your first or did you switch from CFOP? I am going to learn full PLL, sometime soon...

I started with Roux right after the standard beginner method. It was a bit tough at first, but I picked it up quickly. I really enjoy Roux, but nothing's wrong with CFOP either.

Hi. We are the same age and our times are very similar. Welcome to the forum. There's loads of useful information and advice here.

The race to sub 30s thread is good if you want a target to aim for. I'm the slowest on there at the moment.

Thanks newtonbase, it is good to know that there are more aged cuber around. Mmm the race, I will have a look.

Honestly, I have been stuck with 40-50 seconds for quite some time now. I cube very little and inconsistently.

I've been stuck there for a while too. Progress is very slow. I cube every day but don't get much dedicated practice time due to family life. I hope to get my average below 30s eventually but it could take a while.

It's a great hobby.

Same here, work and family take up most of my time. I have one in my bag and one at home so I can cube a little here and there, even while waiting for the traffic lights. My daughter (14) started with me but soon stopped...too boring she claimed. Well, cubing is definitely not the first thing in mind for a 14 teenager I guess. She was once faster than me even with beginner method and I was with F2L.
