Just joined the forum for my 9 year old son. He got a Rubiks brand cube for Christmas & we learnt to solve it together with the beginners method on Rubiks site.
Many of his classmates have cubes now but none really have the dedication to put the time into learning, so he solves their cubes for them most days.
Ordered him a little magic yesterday & he’s keen to improve his speed & go to a competition, just to see what it’s like & not to compete. He’s also keen to try some of the bigger cubes.
Other thing that we spend our time doing mainly revolve around some form of skating, he plays a Ice hockey, I Nordic skate & we both enjoy inline skating, especially slalom, although we are both very much beginners at that too.

Welcome to the forum. If you are going to a competition. You haaaaaave to compete. It is very fun. Second of all, if he you want to get faster, you have to learn an advanced method like CFOP(Most popular, Highly developed, used by Max Park, Mats Valk, Feliks Zemdegs, Considered the best but no necessarily true), Roux(Not very popular, Not very developed, Similar if not more potential than CFOP), or ZZ(Least Popular, Abstract concepts, Difficult to learn, High amount of additional things(Algorithms) that you can learn that can increase your efficiency a lot). To choose one, research them all, then pick one. If you want to learn ZZ, you might want to learn CFOP first because they have some things in common, and CFOP will teach you the way the way the cube works. Anyway, that is just my opinion, happy solving!!!

Thanks Driving Cuber, my son is more interested in trying a larger cube than learning a faster 3x3 method at the moment, he is trying to finger trick though & that’s increasing he’s speed. I’m thinking of trying to learn another way but can’t decide, I learnt 2 different ways to do the 2nd layer, the first made more sense to me as I was doing it, the second involved less moves but was not so intuitive. Would like to learn a more intuitive method instead of a list of algorithms, I think it would help me understand the cube more easily & would probably help in the long run when it comes to the point where I need to plan moves in advance.
Would you say Roux or CFOP is more intuitive?
