Hello, 39-year old noob here, who's driving his wife crazy

I recommend to learn the edge 3-cycle (U-perm) and the corner 3-cycle (A-perm) first.
After those two, learn all 4 G-perms immediately :)

If you know only the U, A, and G perms, then you will be able to do a 1 look PLL exactly 4/9 of your solves (about 44% of the time). You will also be able to solve every PLL case in 2 or fewer looks.

The G-perms look scary so people often learn them last, don't do this! The G-perms are the most common cases, and all four taken together represent a little over 22% of all the PLL cases you will get.

In short, learn A and U first. Each of those two PLLs is two algs because you can cycle in 2 directions. Then learn all 4 G perms right away :) They look scary, but they're not so bad. You will get faster more quickly this way, so your solve times will thank you for it :)

Great info, thanks!

Hi LocoOnSoco,

Nice to see another older cuber. I agree with everything DeeDub said. The sooner you start with a fast cube the sooner you will get used to it. The sooner you start learning OLL's the sooner you can recognize them and execute them with mussle memory. I started to learn full OLL at averaging 40 seconds. Now that I am sub 25 I am glad I know all OLL's since I have a low TPS and need to het as few moves as possible in my solves. Oh.. about the wife.. my wife does not care about the cubing sound a lot eighter.. but she did get used to it :)

Welcome, another old-timer here. Ignore the advice about the cubes--some ideas just get repeated so much that they are accepted as truth and it's all nonsense. Use good equipment. A Weilong is great, stick with it. You'll have to wade through good and bad advice, but basically there is a real depth of information here, keep digging and you'll find nugget after nugget of useful info. I've been cubing for a really long time and I find no end to the depth of what can be improved, whether it be via methods or dexterity.

My wife thankfully has tuned out the sound of the cube. She doesn't even hear it anymore...that's a good thing. It's a part of me, and she accepts it as such.

Keep on speedcubin'.

Well I'm glad I'm not alone on both age and a wife who is annoyed, I too hope she gets used to it, I don't plan on quitting for a while. :)

Welcome to the fun times of speedsolving :)

I will share with you my secret "wife trick":

Write/record a beginners guide for solving the cube and tell her that it would mean a lot to you if she would have a look at it and check if it is understandable for a complete noob (don't use that term though). Of course she will have to test if following the guide will make you able to solve it.

My wife thought she would never learn to do it and decided not to try, but she was very helpful at checking my guide and is now officially sub20 :)

Hello.
I just started about 3 weeks ago and bought an aurora. I absolutely love the way it moves and it is very quiet! My wife can go to sleep while I am solving and scrambling. Had to buy a cube so my son could have his back (original rubik's). By the way, I am 37.
I am also moving on from beginners method by trying to incorporate CFOP into the beginners method. I am getting ready to learn 2 look lol. Good luck to you

Right, it goes like this: "So, how long did it take you to write this? Have you fixed the spare room window yet? Those bins need taking out."

I will look into these! Hopefully when she says "You're buying another cube??" she will understand why. :)

hahaha my mom gets so annoyed by it, the Moyu AoLong is actualy pretty quiet but probably too advanced for you.

Ok I am turning 29 soon I count myself as a mature cuber. To help you filter through misinformation, here is my experience.

I started cubing in November 2013. I knew full OLL/PLL within 2 months. My times dropped massively after learning full OLL/PLL. I don't regret it and I am glad I learned them right away. Now that I am pushing sub-20 I have a 6 second LL and I can just focus strictly on F2L and my cross. If anything, learning full OLL/PLL has made it significantly easier for me learn new algs.

I was fully CN after the first month or so. I feel that it has never been a hindrance and will only be beneficial in the future when I approach sub-10.

I had a Zhanchi after the first two weeks and the Weilong V1 when it came out. Neither cube was ever too fast for me. I don't recommend getting a "slower" cube(Sulong, Aurora, Shuangren) because you are new. I agree with DeeDubb.

Learn however you want. Your commitment will determine your success. People just regurgitate these clichés to be apart of the conversion I guess.

Hello and Welcome Joe.

I notice my situation with my husband is from a " Perfect Married Couple" and now " Unusual Married Couple"

I spend much time with cubes than my husband, he just practice a day before competition and or at Venue hahahaha.

I practice at least 10 solves a day ( if I am not ill). At home I have a special table/ space for all my cubes hahahhaha. I feel my husband loves me so much to see me with all my reactions with Bad and or Good solves hahaahahah

Wish you luck Joe

The Aolong is the Zanchi of moyu, not really for beginners.

Welcome! I also started cubing in my mid 30's and drove my wife nuts. But as you get better she will probably love the attention and admiration you will get from people. At least it worked for me :)

My name is Joe, I decided one day a few months ago to learn to solve a Rubik's. Call it a bucket list kinda thing. Well naturally I got bored of it and the beginner method rather quickly, and discovered CFOP. I only practice a couple days a week but I'm down to about a 1:30 average and getting faster as I learn more. I basically do 2-look but have learned a few OLL's and and a couple PLL's. I now own 3 speedcubes, using a white Weilong MoYu as my timing one because I'm in love with how it feels.

My wife on the other hand thinks i'm nuts, and the sound of the cube turning all the time drives her crazy. I kinda get a kick out of that. Does that me horrible? I think not. ;)

Thanks for reading, I hope to learn a lot more from this site.

here you go http://www.kungfoomanchu.com/guides/andy-klise-3x3x3-speedcubing-guide-v4.pdf
that would be a Great help

an alg a day slash off a second away.. dontry to learn too much algorithims in one day...

This is kinda my thought process as well, I appreciate this viewpoint. I may not be doing it the correct way, but I'm not really doing this to go out and win any competitions. Well, not yet anyway. :)

@ Imago thank you for that link, very helpful.
