Has anybody heard of this (admittedly slow) method?

I learned how to solve a standard 3x3x3 cube back around 2004 or 2005 by looking up a solution on the internet. I don't remember what site it was, but I know the solution steps, in order, were white cross, white corners, middle layer, bottom corners, bottom edges. And here is the weird part: you always hold the cube with the white side on top.

I know this isn't a good method for people interested in solving it quickly, but I was just happy to be able to solve it. But I have scoured the internet looking for this method, and I can't find it anywhere. No mention of it. Anywhere! I feel like it's some Mandela effect **** going on or something!

Am I the only one who learned to solve it this way??

I have met a few people who learned how to do it that way, it doesn’t seem too uncommon

Thanks for confirming I'm not crazy lol. I guess they just purged my slow, archaic method from the internet entirely once what I call the "turn the cube upside down after the first layer" beginner's method became common knowledge. Or something.

The method described is basically the one James Nourse published in the early 80s in his book "The Simple Solution to Rubik's Cube". At least, those were the same steps he used. His method was color neutral though. No requirement for doing white on top.

That's the book I used to solve it for the first time. I was a hero on the school bus.

As Tabe said, that is the method from The Simple Solution to Rubik's Cube which was the most popular guide in the 80's. His method was slow, however, and corners first ended up way faster in those days, so his method dissolved away.

I managed to solve the cube in 1982 at age 6 without any books (although it took me 10-30 minutes), it prevented me from getting beat up at school, for some reason the bullies had some sort of awe. Problem is they would hand me a cube and expect it solved in 2 minutes when it would take 10-30 minutes because I had to solve the corners by a random luck iteration method.
