Hana Nakano's Progression thread: NxN, OH, and ZBLL!

Big update regarding blindfolded:

I was not planning on competing in bigbld at CubingUSA nationals because I didn't think I'd be able to go to a competition to qualify in time. Please Be Qualified 2023 got announced and forced me into action...
So I learned ~1800 bigbld comms (full 3-style) in a little under 3 weeks to prepare.
My current blind times are in the main post, but to reiterate: 4BLD pb is 6:58, and 5BLD is 15:37 - Which I have on video! It's also my first success.

Feels good to finally have a success in my main event... now it's time to do it officially this weekend.

Hello everyone! I haven't posted here in awhile and thought I'd give an update....

I've since retitled this thread, but those of you who remember will know that I was aiming for sub-10 on 3x3. I can say happily that I am now sub-10, i regularly throw down ~9.7-9.9x ao100's now depending on the day. My 3x3 PR avg is 9.66, and PR single is 7.86.

As mentioned in the main post, I have quit blindfolded, and I'll elaborate on it here....
Blindfolded is very stressful for me... competing in general is for me, but blindfolded especially so. On October 7th, 2023 I triple DNF'd officially for the first time in my entire 3BLD career, and I felt that was a good note to take my leave from the event. I still love blind and I won't doubt how fun it can be to do, but competing in it is just too much for me. It was actively hurting my other events.

anyway.... now that I'm not a blinder, I shifted my focus to NxN/OH. Before I did blind, I did a TON of 6x6 and 7x7 as a teen, so I decided to go back to those roots. I'm currently RIGHT on the cusp of all the major minute barriers on 5/6/7 (1:07 on 5x5, 2:01 on 6x6, 2:59 on 7x7 officially) so I feel like this was a good move on my part.

Lastly... the one I am most proud of, I have learned a LOT of ZBLL. I quit mid-2023 and forgot basically all of them, and I've since relearned them all and more. I know T, U, and half of L sets currently. End goal is to know full ZBLL to use for OH and big cubes.

Here's my current 7x7 pb:

Thanks for reading, and I'll see you at Western Champs in August ;)

Yes another person has joined the dark side of learning zbll.

I didn’t know you had an account here. I’ve only seen you on Discord. Welcome back!!!
I forgot how fast you were at big cubes lol. I need to get back into them if I want to do good against @gruuby

Haha thanks, I still have a lot of work to do. My current PRs are what i consider my "at home" times. What discords are we in together??

Sub-10 ao1000! and 9.43 pb ao100!

Feels unreal to finally cross sub-10 ao1000 of my list. Never thought I'd get this far.
Also, I finished L ZBLL, so now I know TUL ZBLL. (216/472!) I'll learn Pi ZBLL after Western Champs in August.

Nice job! Any tips for sub-10? I average 10.5
Hmmmm....
For me, it came down to just "solving good" every time. If you can get a single, you can get an average. Its a mental game.

Your OLL+PLL algs should be "perfect". Ive practiced all of them to minimum sub-1.2. sub-1 is better obviously but even ~1.2 is good enough. If you cant do them that fast after practicing them for a long time, maybe try different algs. I switched my Rb, Jb, E, and V perms in the last year for example.

Your f2l matters way more though. Cross+1 is what made me global sub10. Do cross+1 and learn to actively look ahead without pausing. I had to learn to trust my solutions more and deduce where pieces are.

And I cant emphasize this enough- DO NOT TURN FAST. You want to turn GOOD. No lock ups, no pausing during f2l, and try to predict what kind of OLL youll get while you solve last slot.

As a person who just learned that you need 472 Algorithms for ZBLL (I thought it would be about 50, no idea how I got to that conclusion), I have nothing left to say but congrats on that sub-10 ao1000 and good luck learning Pi ZBLL!
Haha you dont really need 472 because of sune/anti-sune (but I will learn those for OH!)

Knowing TULPH sets is standard for top solvers, and thats 328 algs. It seems scary at first, but you just gotta stay diligent and come up with a strategy. Learning large alg sets is an entirely different skill separate from cubing.

I find training recognition to be da hardest part of learning algs
like I can learn 10+ ltcts in like half an hour but it takes like a week or two before I can use them in actual solves

yeah... Doing drills for ZBLL is not optional. You MUST drill them to use them in real solves reliably. It needs to be automatic just like regular PLL, and thats achieved only by seeing them every day, hundreds of times over.

edit: This applies to blind comms also. I drilled them in sets every day using 3styletrainer and that turned them into automatic algs for me.
