Hi!
I stumbled into this forum while trying to find out if someone else is using the same "algorithm" for 3x3x3 cube as I am.. Can it be that I'm the only one?
As a teenager, I learned some layer by layer algorithm. But then I lost my cube and there was about 20 years in between before I got a new one. I still remembered how to solve first two layers, but the last layer was completely forgotten.
After some twiddling, I managed to solve it intuitively using only the layer2 edge placement move, "U R U' R' U' F' U F" and it's mirror.. That was the only algo I remembered from the 1980's instructions.
It is possible to reorder the last layer pieces using only that move. I use this order for the last layer:
- Edges to correct position, not necessarily right way around
- Edges correct orientation
- Corners correct position
- Corners correct orientation
I found "Y-Move method" and "Sexy Move method" from you wiki, they are similar but the order is different.. They seem to be more efficient as well.
I now also have 2x2x2 and 4x4x4 cubes. I can solve those too, although I had to cheat and find the parity moves for 4x4x4 from the net..
