Looking ahead is what it states looking ahead. When you pick a side to do the cross, you search for 4 edge pieces that make up the cross. I'll give you a real easy example. Hold red front and white on top.
D' B2 D R' L2 F' R D B D2 L R2 B' U' R2 D2 B L R B2 L2 F U2 B D
(This scramble came from JNetCube)
When I solve for the cross i have the white face down (for this particular scramble hold the red face front). Now if you look you have 2 piece relative to each other solved on the white face. These 2 edge pieces are blue/white and green/white. Orange isn't correct though so we got to get it out of where it is in the D layer and put it in the I layer. Luckily when we do this, this solves the red/white edge piece relative to the green/white and blue/white edge piece. To put the orange/white edge piece where it is supposed to go do F2 then R2. This places orange/white where it has to go and then D. For this scramble, that is how you get the cross.
moves to get to the cross- L2, U2, R2, D
This is a very easy cross. Experienced cubers love crosses like these because it is easy to plan ahead to the F2L.
