I am thinking about organizing a competition at some point. I am not sure about the venue. Where are good places to hold competitions? I am not in college so I can rule that out.

Some things to look for include: capacity, price, lighting, if they already have tables & chairs, etc. You should also make sure you know of the venue's rules so you don't break them on accident. I'm hosting a competition in my county fair's exhibit hall. It is a fairly big room where they also have wedding receptions and stuff in. You could also look at churches, school cafeteria's or auditoriums, and libraries.

Don't rule out outdoor venues: parks, large gazebos, fields with benches.

I know it's not mainstream, but it's not unreasonable to host a competition outside. If you can get your hands on the right equipment (tables, chairs, microphone, etc) and confirm that the weather won't be crummy, then outdoor competitions are highly desirable. I know a lot of people that love the ambient sunlight that speedsolving out of doors provides.

We had a CT cube meetup and unofficial competition that took place in a small park at some picnic tables, and I personally really liked the venue.

OP, if you're going to go with an outside event, try and time it during the year where Kansas has good weather(simple Google search something like rainfall per month) and have plans if it rains. Nobody wants their cubes to be soaked, and I doubt people will return to your competition if you can't handle situations like that.
