getting faster than 13.5 with fridrich?

I thought the argument was for "pure fridrich". If its not, then the average move count must be lowered significantly because solving the last layer in one algorithm should also be counted as an "extension" of fridrich.

Does anyone know how many of the top averages had any lucky solves? I ask this because one of the big points that Mrs. Fridrich talks about is luck.
If you look at how Jessica derives her estimate of the limit of CFOP, it includes all steps and 4 corner insertions. That's the basis. If you modify the method to orient edges while inserting the last CE pair (ZBLS), insert multiple corners at the same time (multi-slot), permute corners while orienting (COLL) or if you just get a lucky skip, then clearly it's going to change the basis for the calculation.

This is obvious, why is it a point of contention?

Well, It's not the "limit", just a time that requires tons of practice and skill to break through:)

Not sure how they got that specific time though.

As for ways the best solvers use as shortcuts: there are many:
multislotting is one, as is recognizing OLL skip possibilities during F2L in order to change the F2L slightly, plus other ways to make OLL faster/easier by changing the last F2L slot. I've seen some change F2L algos on the fly to make the next F2l slightly easier.
There are also other optimizations I've seen/heard of.

I like how you say that multislotting is one point, then go on to describe multislotting as though it's another

he didn't describe multi-slotting.

You don't know what multislotting is.

What is multislotting?...Basically multislotting is just a state of mind, where you don't dumbly solve the F2L pairs but try to do the smartest solve you can. It is based on the fact that there are many different ways to insert a prepared pair, and every of these different ways affect pieces differently. Working on multislotting will allow you to influence your next pair when pairing one. Sometimes cases are so fair that you can prepare your next pair while inserting one. And happily those cases happen very often when you work for it.In fact the Absolute Mind to adopt is to always try to influence your next step in order to force skips using Multislotting and F2LL for F2L AND to avoid pauses between steps using R-OLL or slowing down at the end of the alg in order to have a fast fluent and short F2L and a fast and fluent LL.
