Forum polution and misuse

We're working on this. There's a thread in the admin/mod forum but only pjk and I have posted in it.

It's being worked on, albeit from a prevention point of view rather than a cleaning point of view.

You maybe understood me wrong.
As you will read in the first post of this thread: I don't blame the guy who initially made the post much since he is new!

I blame all the guys who responded to the thread, guys (or girls) who are already on this forum a bit longer and know the way you should behave here.
If we 'let it grid and play out' this forum will soon be a copy of Twistypuzzles, a forum of which you maybe know of, with loads and loads of double or useless threads.

Also I think this is the perfect spot for this thread. This section is about help support & suggestions, in other words the way this forum is build up. The place where we talk about the forum as a whole.

I don't know why but I get the feeling you don't like me or our suggestions. I hope I am wrong there. Are you really in favor of the double double posts and non-thinking users?

When new cubers come here and see a forum with lots of playfull, too informal threads, they might get the idea they can just post away without checking. That's not what this forum need imho.
When I was a new cuber I was frightened to post anything, first checking out what people would talk about and making sure they didn't bully me away because I was new and slow. The forum's were more serious back then. It gave me the idea that you should think much before you would post something.

I hope you’re not inferring I’m affronted by you. I haven’t been around long enough for you to make a lasting impression. I intended the “mis-placed thread” as a kindly jab. I appreciate that this particular forum takes cubing seriously. It’s rather unexpected really; as any net-head who’s swam the vastness knows.

Some actual constructive advice: let the mods modify unclear titles in brackets.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [good times with Petrus]

Mr Henxu, do we really need to quote Erik's full post? :p

I ''only'' quoted what was important for me.
And don't call me Mr. Henxu. That made me feel like if i had 40 years old -.-''

I'm agree with Erik, in every forum I've entered (sry my bad english) not only cubing forum, also electronics or anything like that, I was AFRAID too, I didn't want that the people begin call me , ''Noob'' ''Use the search function'' or anything like that.
I hope the people who opens and answers those threads can read THIS thread...

I quite agree. When I made my first post (in the OH section) I went through every other post in the OH section first to make sure it hadn't been covered. Although I must admit I'm probably not the best example to these forums, I spam a lot. However I have steadily become much less interested in the forums these days, and tend to read only 3 or 4 posts a day, and ignore the rest.

There's a very nice "Please read before posting" sticky in the Beginner's forum. A lot of the problems we're seeing could be alleviated if people actually do what it says. I also think it needs to replace/merge with the sticky with the same title in the Speedcubing forum so that more people get the message.

A lot of the members here are kids and are not necessarily up on netiquette. We can correct them without biting their heads off, it will only help them in other forums.

[Hyde]We could also correct them by biting their heads off. That would also help the other forums.[/Hyde]

[Jekyll]I thought I was pretty clear in http://www.speedsolving.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5701 post 18, but I have sent the creators of post 19 and 22 the following PM:
Subject = please read before you post
Body =
Nothing serious, but I wanted to tell you that you should be more carefull about the way you post things. For the reason why I am telling you this, please check this thread: http://www.speedsolving.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5701
Specifically post 18 and 19 / 22[/Jekyll]

Why don't we all just start quoting Pochmann in response to these useless threads? =D

That's an option, Stefan has this nice subtle way of letting people realize the content of their post was flawing xD
I'm not sure everyone would get the hint ;)

By the way, apparently people just don't read the previous post in the thread before posting. After Shelley, me, AVG posted to not post in that best times thread there was still a member posting anyway. EDIT: apparently the number of people posted after AVG's message is still growing..

Lets all try to be a little more like Stefan :D

Arnaud, if your Magic/Master Magic how-to video was any indication, you already have quite an impressive collection of flying ponies. Stefan must be jealous.

Somebody should just close that fastest times thread if it isn't closed already. It's obvious people just don't read.

It's not that people can't read, it's just when a majority of people see that thread, they'll post their times and leave. Which defeats the purpose of the thread, it's a bunch of already collected data, in a form that no one is reading, people are just posting away.

To prevent topic flooding all people should read the entire thread before making a comment (with obvious exceptions of accomplishment threads and the like)

I like Erik's comment about being afraid to post and being bullied for being slow :P (still true for me...)

The forum doesn't allow a moderator to close a thread?

I agree with all that's been discussed. Another thing I really hate in these forums is when people title their threads like "what is teh best way 2 do this" or "what is the best method 4 blindfold." Using the numbers for the word just really bothers me, and it doesn't look nice.

Seconded... or 2nded? ;)

We can close threads, but the only ones of us that can moderate the speedsolving and beginner's section sub-forums are the super-mods, and quite frankly none of us go through every single thread in there.

The best way to have a mod deal with a thread is to report it, imho.

Now I'm actually dizzy from all the laughing (about Arnaud's Hyde as well). Lucas's comment about Chris K. was also brilliantly funny. Great evening so far, with a few threads to go.

Arnaud, don't become like me, I'm trying to become like you!
