I am trying to develop a method that is based entirely on one alg. The problem is that this alg should be able to flip edges, rotate corners and also position both of them. Because I don't think one alg can do all of that AND be beginners-friendly I am allowing for a little deviation.

Assumptions: White is opposite Yellow. White is down face. "Ultimate Alg" is R U R' U', from now on called ALG.

Step 1. Create a correct white cross in two steps:

Step 1a. Put all four white (down) edges with their white sticker up on the yellow (up) face. Every beginner should be able to do this after a couple of minutes. This is the only thing the beginner has to do without an alg.

Step 1b. Turn the yellow face so a white edge matches up, move it to the white face with a half turn, repeat untill white cross is done.

Step 2. Complete the first layer:

Step 2-1. A white corner is present in the yellow layer. Use U move to put the corner above its destination. Rotate entire cube (Y move) to put the destination corner at Right-Down-Front. Repeat ALG untill corner is correct.

Step 2-2. A white corner is present in the white layer, at its destination, but needs to be rotated. Rotate entire cube (Y move) to put the destination corner at Right-Down-Front. Repeat ALG untill corner is correct.

Step 2-3. A white corner is present in the white layer, but not at its destination. Rotate entire cube (Y move) to put the destination corner at Right-Down-Front. Perform ALG once. Goto step 2-1.

Step 3. Complete the second layer:

Step 3-1. A non-yellow edge is present in the yellow layer. When holding its destination at Front-Right the Up-color of non-yellow edge matches to color of the right face. Rotate entire cube (Y move) to put the destination edge at Front-Right. Use U move to put the non-yellow edge at Up-Left. Perform (Alg F' U' F)

Step 3-2. A non-yellow edge is present in the yellow layer. When holding its destination at Front-Right the Up-color of non-yellow edge matches to color of the front face. Rotate entire cube (Y move) to put the destination edge at Front-Right. Use U move to put the non-yellow edge at Up-Front. Perform (F Alg F'). Goto step 3-1.

Step 3-3. A non-yellow edge is present in the second layer. Rotate entire cube (Y move) to put the destination edge at Front-Right. Perform (Alg F' U' F). Goto step 3-1 or 3-2.

Step 4. Orient the edges of the last layer:

Step 4-1. Use U move so incorrectly oriented edge is at Up-Front and (if any exists) correctly oriented edge is at Up-Left . Perform (F Alg F').

Step 5. Permutate the edges of the last layer:

Step 5-1. Use U move so 1 (or 0 if 1 is not possible) correcly permutated edge exists. Use Y move to put the correctly permutated edge at Up-Left. Perform (R U R' U R U2 R' U2)

Step 6. Permutate the corners of the last layer:

Step 6-1. Use Y move so 1 (or 0 if 1 is not possible) correctly permutated corner is at Front-Up-Right. Perform (Alg L' Alg*5)

Step 7. Orient the corners of the last layer (finishes solve):

Step 7-1. Turn the entire cube so yellow becomes down and white becomes up. Perform Alg untill Right-Down-Front is oriented correctly, Perform D. Repeat untill all four corners are oriented correctly!

FINISHED!

This is an extremely inefficient method of solving the cube, but it only requires you to remember one alg and some setup/close moves, except for the Tsune at step 5.

Begging Request:
If anyone knows of a edge-3-cycle that is based on R U R' U', please let me know.

R U R' U' is an edge 3-cycle. If you conjugate it with R' U2 it cycles 3 edges in the U-layer without flipping them. So R' U2 R U R' U' U2 R = R' U2 R U R' U R.

Thanks, I will try (R' U2 ALG U2 R) tonight.

My goal with this method is to get to Algs that uses only ALG and at most one move and its inverse.

Status sofar:
Step 1: no alg at all
Step 2: ALG only
Step 3: (F ALG F') is OK. (ALG F' U' F) could use improvement, maybe a cube rotation could turn F' U' F + U into ALG
Step 4: (F ALG F') is OK.
Step 5: (R' U2 ALG U2 R) could use improvement, but is much better than before.
Step 6: (ALG L' ALG*5 L) is OK.
Step 7: (ALG*n D) is OK.

I will look at step 3 and 5 tonight.

Any other thoughts about this method?

For Step 3 I found a very obvious one last night:
(ALG*3 U ALG U' ALG*3)

It uses only ALG and 1 move and its inverse, but I like (ALG F' U' F) better so I am not sure which I will use.

If anyone has a better idea for step 3 or 5, I would really like to hear it.

Once I have this method finalized a will:
* Write out the solution more clearly
* Create pictures to ease recognition
* Add a sample solve
* Create a tutorial video
* Maybe write a program that generates a solution based on a 2D-layout from a user
* Put all of the above on my site (http://www.arnaudensandra.nl/pages/puzzles/cube3/default.asp)

HELP! I'm stuck. I have *2* correct, not 0 or 1. And I applied the alg over and over but I always get 2 solved.

Btw, show me a state where it's not possible to get at least 1 correct.

Write out the solution more clearly

That is why I say 1 (not at least 1). You don't have 1 but 2. You should use U move to get 0 because 1 is not possible. This case is exactly the reason why I mentioned the (or 0 if 1 is not possible) part.

I hope I have helped you out and that you can continue from now. Please let me know if you have any other problem solving your cube

I think you are probably the first to try out all the steps as I wrote them down. Please let me know what you think.

The funny thing of this alg, it is just getting out and inserting pairs AND, on megaminx it is also a (pure) 3 cykle but then for the corners!
You can also use this same alg on the minx for the edges. Just use two non-adjacent pairs for that. ;)

Hi Jo?l, good to see you back on this forum!

I like your alg from a "commutator" type of view, but I can't see how it fits:

"My goal with this method is to get to Algs that uses only ALG and at most one move and its inverse."

This is more like a use only ALG1, ALG2 and their inverses (PQP'Q'). My goal was to have all Algs be like [q](P)^n[qq'](P)^n[qq']
where P = RUR'U'
len(q) = 1 move
count(q) <= 1 and count(q') <= 1

The current Alg for Step 5: (R' U2 ALG U2 R) is wrong because q = R'U2 and thus len(q) = 2 moves

Your alg is wrong because you use both P and P' and because len(Q) = 4

If I rewrite your alg to P Q P^5 Q it is still wrong because len(Q) = 4, but otherwise it is ok.

I just don't see the improvement compared to the current alg.

Arnoud,

I didn't exactly read the whole message. I was suspecting that this alg was not what you were looking for, but I just thought it would be nice to post the alg. I think its a very funny beginners method 3-cycle...

In fact, now that I am typing this, I am thinking I might just change the algs on my website.... Hmm..

Joel,
This alg is nice: RUR'U' L'U'LU U RU'R' U'L'UL

But when I learned to do it, I liked your F2 U L R' F2 L' R U F2 better. The funny thing is, I am averaging under 20 seconds now, and still use that alg for those 3 edge cycles. It can actually be executed pretty quick. However, I am going to change over to:
(R' U R') (U' R' U' R') (U R U R2)
and
(R2 U' R' U') (R U R U) (R U' R)

Those are even nicer, I am just focusing on practicing overall and finishing up learning all the OLL's before I switch some of my PLL's.
