So I am going to a PBQ comp, and I really want to get an FMC mean because I will most likely lose my PR streak it I don’t.
I really want to get one because I don’t have an official mean yet, and because I want a 20 comp PR streak.

Because I have a high DNF rate, I was wondering if anybody knows an effective way to safety. I was initially thinking to just do CFOP, but I was wondering if there were any other better ways to safety.

If you haven't found anything good 45 minutes in, write out any kind of solution (could be CFOP, as you say) and then use the remaining time to check it.

You might also want to figure out why you're DNFing and then work on that. Are you writing down the moves incorrectly, are you running out of time, etc. etc.

The biggest problem is that I often make mistakes while inserting which cost a lot of time

Most of the time I DNF because I insert until about 5 minutes left and then I scramble to write something down

I've done 7 official FMC attempts so far, all have been successful. The way I safety is that I basically immediately write down any solution I find (not on the paper I hand in) if it's better than any other I've found, and check it a few times (the first solution I write down usually being ~15 minutes in). I make sure to have the best solution written down on the actual paper before the '5 more minutes' announcement, so I have 5 more minutes to check the solution. That way, if it ends up being incorrect, I still have some time left to write down the shortest other solution I found. Most of the time that best solution does end up being correct, though, because I had already checked each solution a few times.

Also, in terms of how to check your solution: make sure not to look at the cube while checking the solution, but only read the moves. Otherwise, you might do a move different from what you wrote down because you know that is what the solution should be, meaning your solution was wrong and you don't notice. I also never use rotations in my solutions, because 1. It eliminates even more bias in checking the solution, because I'll have no idea how the solution works anymore, and 2. It makes it easier for the organizers/delegates to count the moves.

Would it be a good idea to write down a CFOP solution and check it a few times immediately after finding a good 2x2x3 block solution?
All my FMC attempts so far have been just doing CFOP-ish solves while potentially leaving 3 pieces unsolved and basically try until I get a lucky last layer, but yes I'd definitely recommend at least having a somewhat ok solution as a backup during at least the last 20 minutes

I am also going to the same comp. See you both there!

But in terms of safetying I am not the best to ask however what I would recommend is to learn how insertions are screwing you over every time, or to write an insertion commutator right after you find a skeleton so you don't DNF, even if it is before 5 min left
