I had a Rubik's Cube in 1981 but never got anywhere with it. I decided to take it up again in January when I quit smoking. It has not only given me something to do with my hands and mind, but it has helped with my arthritis, memory, and cognitive abilities in general. I still use the Beginners' Method. I don't time myself often, but my PB (timed) is 38 seconds on a Moyu Aolong V2. I've bought dozens of cubes (still cheaper than cigarettes) and given about twenty away to people I think would enjoy the challenge. I find it therapeutic, but it a perishable skill. I bought a Valk 3 that arrived earlier this week and I don't know if I like it better than my stickerless Aolongs yet or not. It's slick, smooth, fast, and solid. Funny how much difference 2mm makes. I've acquired about fifteen different types of twisty puzzles so far, but only solved the 3x3x3, 2x2x2, Skewb, Super Floppy 1x3x3, and the #&($#&@ Fisher Puzzle. I'm fascinated by the different mechanisms.

Question. I have found myself counting instead of saying algorithms out loud or in my head and then I forget the algorithm although it remains in my muscle memory. This has a tendency to mess me up if I make a mistake and I get quite lost sometimes then. Any suggestions for overcoming this? Thanks in advance.

I started the Unifed Cubers Group on facebook hoping to meet other cubers in Upstate South Carolina. Feel free to join us.

Attached is my six month old granddaughter, Rhiannon. She shall be my prodigy.

As for the messing up during an alg, I would just suggest to practice the algs until you only need muscle memory. There is no reason to say the moves in your head, and while it may help short term, it would be better in the long run to rely on muscle memory for your algs.

If the cube binds or catches while going through an algorithm fast I sometimes get lost. Not being able to recite the algorithm anymore because I'm relying solely on muscle memory, it leaves me in a bind.

My only suggestion there would be to turn a little slower so you don't get those catches. Practice the alg really smooth until you can get it without catches consistently. This problem will go away eventually as you get more solved under your belt
