I had a Rubik's Cube in 1981 but never got anywhere with it. I decided to take it up again in January when I quit smoking. It has not only given me something to do with my hands and mind, but it has helped with my arthritis, memory, and cognitive abilities in general. I still use the Beginners' Method. I don't time myself often, but my PB (timed) is 38 seconds on a Moyu Aolong V2. I've bought dozens of cubes (still cheaper than cigarettes) and given about twenty away to people I think would enjoy the challenge. I find it therapeutic, but it a perishable skill. I bought a Valk 3 that arrived earlier this week and I don't know if I like it better than my stickerless Aolongs yet or not. It's slick, smooth, fast, and solid. Funny how much difference 2mm makes. I've acquired about fifteen different types of twisty puzzles so far, but only solved the 3x3x3, 2x2x2, Skewb, Super Floppy 1x3x3, and the #&($#&@ Fisher Puzzle. I'm fascinated by the different mechanisms.
Question. I have found myself counting instead of saying algorithms out loud or in my head and then I forget the algorithm although it remains in my muscle memory. This has a tendency to mess me up if I make a mistake and I get quite lost sometimes then. Any suggestions for overcoming this? Thanks in advance.
I started the Unifed Cubers Group on facebook hoping to meet other cubers in Upstate South Carolina. Feel free to join us.
