Cube for beginners?

The cheapest of the 3 dayans is lingyun. Just tighten it to prevent excessive pops.

IMO the logic on using storebought is flawed for these reasons:

  • "I have gotten a sub30 just by using a storebought" - you could have probably gotten your sub30 faster with a DIY
  • "It helps accurate turning". You need to learn to turn accurately anyway - if you really want to improve. Learn to do so with a DIY.
  • "Storebought helps to slow you down for look-ahead" - Look ahead is a principle to improve cubing speed. it has little to do with the type of cube. You just need to go slow, whether you use a DIY or storebought.

I concede this: you will be tempted to go fast with a DIY (hence the advice about storebought). DON'T.

@fiftyniner: YAY! Finally someone seeing sense. Seriously guys what's all this recommending he buy a type D or C... Why? They are nothing compared to a Dayan cube, he'd just be wasting his money.

I think you should go straight to a Dayan (Guhong, lingyun, Lunhui, or the new Zhanchi), but the choice is yours as to which one. Guhong is the most popular cube, it's light and fast, but sometimes a little hard to control (can sometimes turn a side that you weren't meaning to until you get better with it), LingYun is a little easier to control but can be prone to popping, LunHui is very stable (cause it's pretty heavy) and is almost unpoppable, but is a little more locky, ZhanChi I can't comment on as it's only just coming out now, but should be a successor to the GuHong.

If you want to spend a little bit more money you could buy it from www.lubixcube.com, he sells Guhongs and LunHuis (and will sell ZhanChis) prelubricated (properly done, starting with the core) and also they are hand modded to make them a little smoother.
