I'm right now having 5-7 second avgs for the cross. I also heard from other people that there is a specific way for solving the cross.

Should I be a white cross solver (solve the cross in fixed colours), a dual solver (solve the cross on 2 fixed colours) or be colour neutral (find the easiest colour to solve the cross)?

It's easiest and possible fastest to focus on just one colour, especially since it helps F2L case recognition. I suggest just doing cross with one colour. Now when you get very fast, you can be opposite colour neutral because it's easy to do F2L from the opposite direction because you just reverse your pattern/case recognition from your original colour.

badmephisto's cross page
Averge number of moves to solve white cross: 5.81
Averge number of moves to solve dual cross: 5.39
Averge number of moves to solve neutral cross: 4.81

from this data, neutral cross seems best. however, that one move barely impacts the final time. also, it is easier for the human brain to recognize colors (on the cube) quickly if it has to recognize the same colors over and over -- it learns to ignore other colors when solving F2L. this advantage cannot be had with color-neutrality. was that really confusing? sorry.

[citation needed]

After I've decided which color to use for the cross for a CFOP solve, I know what the LL color is and I can ignore it perfectly fine for the rest of the F2L. It might be theoretically easier if I had always used some particular color for cross, but I'm certain that the difference wouldn't be big enough to be significant.

If you ask me, immediately after a speedsolve, what color my LL was, I wouldn't remember. Even when solving with Petrus or Heise or some other method where color neutrality plays a bigger role, remembering which colors I've used for which blocks doesn't slow me down at all. It's just the people who've restricted their choices to some arbitrary color(s) who are having problems unlearning that habit.

*sigh*

I hate explaining this. If using a different color affects your solving/lookahead ability, then you are NOT color neutral. You are just using a random color each time. Color neutral means that you are not affected by using a random color. So your statement that this advantage "cannot be had with color-neutrality" is not only false, but by definition, contradicts itself.
