So I've been trying to learn how to solve the 3 x 3 blindfolded today from badmephisto's video, i watched it a couple of times before I understood the method used, so I can do that without a problem, but when I come to learning how to memorise the pieces, I come into a problem.
I'm confused on how you remember what setup moves are needed for solving each piece, I see in badmephisto's video that he memorises the pieces in a certain orientation, eg, GR, not RG, but I don't know how this tells you what setup moves are needed.
So, briefly, how do you know what setup moves are needed for each piece?

I think he memorizes it by the corresponding center piece. So if you have a RedGreen piece, then the proper place it should be placed in is between the Red and Green center pieces. You might need some extra thought here, before executing the permutations.
You will need to think which way the piece is oriented: RG or GR
You will need to think about the corresponding center pieces: Red on left, Green on right, or vise versa
After that, you will need to visualize what the setup move will be. If the Red and Green center pieces are on the right side, you might do xx and if they are on the left side of the cube then you do the setup xx. You just have to do this intuitively, or with enough practice, muscle memory.

You just need to memorize the piece with orientation, and then you visualize the placement and setup of the cubie.

GR = green sticker on the Green-red edge
RG = red sticker on nthe green-red edge

same edge but different target to shoot too:)
With Old Pochmann you should think in "stickers" not "edges"

As far as set up moves is concerned: just bring the target sticker to UL
visualise your cube and see how you bring it there without disturbing the 1x1x3 block on UR

For the best written tutorial on OP:
Joël OP tutorial, reccommended by mr Pochmann himself
There is a complete list with set up moves in the tutorial but I reccommend to not learn them by heart: understand them

sooo, im still a little confused, because sometimes when I do the setup move without looking for practice, i find that after I have done it, the edge isn't oriented correctly, it needs to be flipped. Do I have to memorise what setup moves I have to do at the start, or is there a way of telling which way a piece is oriented?
I'm sorry if the answers right in front of me, but I'm new to blindfolded cubing, so I don't quite get every concept yet.

I am in the process of learning BLD as well and I ran into your exact issue. As others said, your memo should be focused on the sticker. You DO NOT memo the set up moves, remember where you are shooting the piece rather than the moves to set that up. Practice the setup moves with your eyes open so you get the full understanding then start with a few edges and practice your memo and execution. After a bit, your setup moves will become intuitive. (I am new as well so be sure to also reference some of the tutorials such as Zane's tutorial which is really well done: http://www.speedsolving.com/forum/showthread.php?34298-How-to-solve-a-Rubik-s-Cube-BLD-Progression )

Now, I am in the process of working on the corners, similar except more orientations to consider.

hello names chris
here are a couple videos that i found that helped me for my memo system for the corners, and edges.

i started with doing like 3 edges at a time and working my way up to all the edges, writing my memo down on paper and doing sited solves to see if i was doing it right or not.
and i did my corners the same way too, eventually i would do the whole cube, write down my memo, and sit at a desk and hide my cube under the deck and go through my memo, then i would see if i solved it when i was done, i did this over a hundred times till i got faster at it.
and eventually you loose the paper and try it the same way blind, eventually you'll be doing the whole cube memo and solving it completly blind.
and somthing that might help, i would scramble my cube write the memo down, memo what i wrote down, then use my ipod or camera and video my self doin the blind solve.
then you can go back and see the mistakes you might have made.

i hope this helps you.

I used to have trouble understanding it too. When my friend was teaching me I would always say, "So this piece goes here." and he would be like "Nonono". You have to think, this sticker goes here. I think Cubenovice already said this but whatever.

hey, thanks for all your replies guys, I think I'm starting to get the hang of it, I guess it was just really hard to grasp the concept at first, but now I just need to keep on practicing and practicing.
