Hi I just joined this site today, and I've done a fair share of looking through the threads on this website as well as links to some other great websites. Just a little info to let you know where I am in terms of solving:

I am in no way what-so-ever a speed cuber yet. About 3 weeks ago I learned how to solve the 3x3, with what I suppose is referred to as the beginner's method. I bought a 4x4 yesterday and learned how to do it (still got a few glitches to work out), and actually managed to solve a 5x5 out of curiosity :o. anyway, I've never actually timed myself with the 3x3, but I imagine that my average time is probably around like 2 min or less.

The way I've been solving the 3x3 is with the most basic method, however I learned with keeping the original layer (the cross and corners, I use white) on top. My question is: In order to begin learning how to speed cube, that I flip the cube over and basically start over by learning all the new algorithms? All of the methods I've been looking at require you to flip the cube on the other side, which makes sense to me because it would be easier to see the pieces all over the cube. Still, it seems like I would have a lot of memorizing to do if I were to begin doing this, so I'm hoping someone has a suggestion. All input is greatly appreciated thanks

Speedcubing means trying to get faster at solving the cube. So you are a speedcuber.

Flipping the cube over is unnecessary when you are getting fast. How? Solve your cross and corners on the bottom of the cube. It might be a little harder, but it will be well worth it when you average like 20 seconds. I would recommend start solving the first layer on the bottom side before learning anything else. It's actually easier when solving the first layer corners because you can see the entire U face.

Tutorial and algorithms are in this video:

Sort of off topic, but did you by any chance learn how to solve the Rubik's cube from here?

But otherwise, if you want to continue what you're doing, do cross on bottom(still white)
It'll take a while to get used to, but if you force yourself to now, and continue for a week or so, you should get sub 1:30

google 'online stopwatch' and time yourself...post what you get

and watch 'badmephisto's videos on youtube...
ALL of them in the Beginner tutorial...they cut my time down tremendously!!!

Have fun and continue cubing!!
