are speedstacks timers worth it?

[phononmusic]

especially if you're not really planning on going to competitions, do you think they enhance the experience or hold you more accountable than just timing with a keyboard? let me know your thoughts!

[siwoo]

yes

[Skewby_Doo]

I think that a stackmat is worth it but I use the older gan timer and it is pretty good. I think that it may be better than speedstacks just because of the bluetooth being so easy to use with cstimer and cubedesk, but if you want to hardcore comp sim I would get a stackmat.

To be clear, it does not need to be a speed stack brand. Those are quite expensive, and you can get Qiyi or Gan timers. I do recommend a timer that is at least shaped like a speed stack timer so that you can practice good timer starts and stops for comps.

I think SpeedStacks timers are absolutely worth it, I have done 10000+ solves on mine and it is great!

They are great value

1. they are harder to miss than the space bar on your laptop
2. It’s good practice to simulate comps
3. Slamming your hands down looks cool to non cubers

[Lord_Oscar]

Also they last well. There’s a cubehead video of him ABUSING a QiYi timer and it survives. If you replace the batteries it will last for a long time. Mines lasted 3 years and I treat it pretty bad

Yes, especially if you do 2x2.

[1x1 wr holder!]

Yes, especially if you do 2x2.

especially if you do 1x1

Ah I thought you meant the speedstacks brand. stackmat timers are 100% worth it, but YJ, Qiyi, etc branded ones are better

[Bingus Ringus McDingus]

I personally recommend the GAN timer because it can work with smartcubes and lets you record times directly to your phone or Mac.

Yes, especially if you do 2x2.

Yeah, I think the events where you need stackmat, in the sense that keyboard could give noticeably faster times are:

2x2
Pyraminx
Skewb
Clock
3x3
Square-1
One-Handed

that being said, if you can stackmat for all events, that is good, but the above events are probably where it’s most important to have a stackmat.

Very but if you lose it or it gets stollen it’s kinda hard to transition back to keyboard or phone
