4BLD SUCCESS ON MY FIRST ATTEMPT?!?! (Yann1qua12DagOat's progression thread)

I've just started practising bld again, haven't gotten around to full attempts yet but I'm doing 10 edges and 10 corners only solves each for the next couple of days, and then I'll get back into full solves (hopefully by the time Queensland Open happens I get back to my speed from before the break I took).

yeah i changed the title of this thread for good reason

nah bro i could've gotten an 8 on the last one i just forgot how to do a z perm (i called it - i said i'd count a sub-10 before this average happened and i definitely meant it....)

also i got into finals for 3 bld somehow with a 2:56 PB3 solve IN COMP (btw blind is so hard to perform well in for comps for me at least)

my friend also nearly got FNR for 3x3 single, she knew that 6.69 was the previous one and she got 6.68, just to find out that the current one is 6.67, so she missed out on FNR by .01 but she was super happy still!!!

YOOOOO LETS GOOO

Just to make it clearer without having to make 2 posts, I put my summary of day 2 in the spoiler below.

I really want to learn 4bld in the next 2 weeks, and what got me to think this was this video, basically a random dude reacting to the video that Stucube made about Stanley Chapel's 4bld dominance
To achieve this, I probably should actually bother to get good letter pair words memorised. @abunickabhi @bldcuber314 I know you guys are really good at blindfolded, so could you please give me some advice on how to get into 4bld and better at bld in general? I am going to watch J Perm's video tomorrow.

Also here are my really bad letter pairs that took AGES to make: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1SV7sYhZzU8UnmyAk0duoR0Z1x7AnevlENMf5WDtxlUE/edit?usp=sharing

so... I didn't exactly get a sub-10 average.... 13.something is good enough ig

I was practising 3bld before finals and got a 2:39 pb as well as a 2:01 pb right after. Sadly both were hand scrambles but the memo was just good in addition to no pausing in execution.

I got a sub-2:00 megaminx solve which made the cutoff, and I competed in 3bld finals (first finals ever)!!! It was definitely more
nerve-wracking than a normal round, but I still got a 3 and a half minute success. Because the cumulative time limit was 10 minutes and I average 3:30 or so, I purposely DNF'd my first solve after 15s and then my second after 32s (so that I have more chance of getting actual full attempts on potential good scrambles), before I got decent scrambles on solves 3 and 5. On solve 4 I DNF'd because I had only 6 corners but 14 edges to memo so I completely forgot the corners and had to DNF right after finishing edges so that I could maybe get another attempt in. Solve 5 had super easy memo but I was nervous as I had to get 2:30 and I've only gotten under it twice, so although the memo was fast I fumbled the exec super hard

It was a SUPER successful competition overall and @Martyt7777 I hope you can also go to the Toowoomba Cubing Carnival comp in August, I'm already signed up.

Personally I never made a letter pair sheet and at least for me I think it's a waste of time(kind of a hot take). That way you can use different letter pairs depending on the situation and just by doing solves you end up learning the pairs anyway.

U R B' L2 F D F U2 D2 L' U2 B2 R' F2 R' D2 L2 D2 R' F Fw2 U R Fw2 Rw2 B2 D2 F2 Uw2 L Fw2 U B' R' U D' B' Rw2
This is an edges only scramble for 4x4. Today I started learning 4bld and I'm having some strange things happen

I got all the letters right up to here: OS NP DI KQ WV | AX HA | then when I went to BC, I found that it doesn't actually solve C for some reason. the rest of my memo after AX HA wasa BC FT LF RM B | E GE | FW F (parity). What did I do wrong here? Because I had W twice and F twice? Somebody please explain what I did wrong, it would be very appreciated!

Yep it's the F's and W's. You already had those (the WV and the FT). Doing them again mixes them up. C is probably affected by your parity algorithm, but should be fine if you get rid of the last FWF. Not sure why you added them?

Thanks for the response!
I figured it out - I was doing the M2 thing where you swap to the opposite letter for C and W if they are second in a pair, which does not work in 4bld. I should've payed more attention to the tutorial!!!
The memo does actually end at E GE and there isn't parity because there are 26 letters (24 - 1 + 3 new cycles = 26)

I'm going to try maybe 3 more of these wings only scrambles and write down all the letter pairs just to get super familiar with the memo and execution before moving on to centers.

Ok could somebody give me a better explanation than Google AI did for why this memo is correct for this scramble (white edges top, green edges front)?
My original memo before trying to solve it was this:
MU IV BN EC JQ OK RW TF K
And I was quite confused with the BN and EC, as in whether to make it AN and EB, but trial and error with solving the cube got me to BN and EC. I honestly still am confused about which letter to pick (A or B) when going to the first white piece in a memo so any clarification would be super helpful!!

Without doing the last letter (B or K or whatever it may be), this is what I get after executing the rest of the letters:

WIN_20260630_11_05_12_Pro.webp

If I do either from here it doesn't solve the cube. but i did K B K at the end and that solved the cube. Could somebody please explain how this is meant to be???? Memo is now MU IV BN EC JQ OK RW TF KB K and there are 3 K's. It has 19 letters so there must've been 2 new cycles as there were 6 solved pieces at the beginning.

argh my brain hurts

So when doing white centers you start with B, you never actually do A since it’s your buffer and it will solve itself at the end. I’m not exactly sure what the scramble it is you are using and I can help figure out your memo!

Sorry about forgetting to add the scramble! Here it is (I held it with white top green front for the outer edges):
D2 R2 D' F R F U2 F L U2 L' F2 R' B2 U2 R2 B2 R' B2 U Rw2 U' Fw2 U' L Fw2 L' F2 U2 L D' Fw' D' R D R Uw' Fw' L' B Fw' L' Rw2 U
