Hi Folks,

I am very new to cubing, less than two months since my first solve, and I have been progressing pretty well. I learned intuitive F2L and full 4LLL but since then I have only been solving rather than focused learning. My times have been steadily lowering and are getting close to sub 50 second average with a 35s single PB today.

I feel like my F2L is still very inefficient but it is definitely where most my time gains are coming from so it is getting better. I am about as fast as I can get with 4LLL though there is still some time to be saved in case recognition.

What do you believe I should focus on learning next?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hello there

Are you color neutral? If not, I would start solving on all sides, for better times later.
For improvement now, focus on how efficient you are with pairing and inserting your F2L Pairs. When you get to like 30s you could start to learn PLL if you want and with about 15-20s you should learn OLL.
To improve your F2L pairing and insertion, you should watch some example solves and just turn around a bit on your cube. But remember in cubing the most important matter is having fun, so if you don't want to do or learn something, just cube, it can be important to be fast, but that doesn't have to make you bored.

Thank you very much for the advice.

I am absolutely having fun anytime I'm cubing. I'm pretty focused on dropping my times on 3x3 as I really enjoy seeing those numbers drop but when I want to slow down and chill, I'll bust out the megaminx and relax lol.

I started working on colour neutrality pretty early on but I was very focused on being sub 1 minute for my first comp last weekend so I was just solving white cross for the last two weeks. I'm back to solving neutral now though I'm obviously faster on white.

I did print off Cubehead's OLL checklist PDF with the intent to work on that after the comp but PLL sounds like a better idea first.

Thanks again!

fluidity in f2l is very important so instead of turning fast for one pair and then taking a few seconds to find the next one, you should try and be finding the 2nd pair while solving the first pair a bit slower. you can also drill algs. good luck at the comp

I feel like you should learn full pll first, then focus on your f2l (if you use cstimer you can do the cross solved scrambles then stop timer when you finish f2l) then learn full oll, and also do slow solves sometimes and other times practice your oll and pll using a trainer, or learn new algs

I'm only a 25s solver but I've learned a lot of algs to compensate my slow old fingers
I would recomend this order (That's how I did it ;) )
  1. learn to do some efficient cross solutions with relative positioning
  2. 2 Look PLL and OLL
  3. Intuitive F2L
  4. 1 Look PLL (including the complex looking cases like G-Perm. The just look crazy and are not really harder to recognize or execute)
  5. Some 1 Look OLL Cases. There are some easy ones like T, b.. that most already know and you just have to do 2 Look OLL Algs in the right orientation
  6. Improve F2L, probably learn couple of algs for some not so intuitive cases like when both pieces are in the correct slot with wrong orientation.
  7. 1 Look OLL
  8. Improve F2L again
It helps very much to watch example solves on Youtube. Sometimes you see very easy tricks you never found out by yourself.
It also helps to do some slow solves where you are fluent but slow enough to spot the next F2L pair or even very slow where you play around with different possibilities.

If you can get color neutral it's good, because the earlier you lern it the easier it is
But I also think it is a bit overrated.

There are Cubers in the top10 of the world ranking who are not fully color neutral (but most of them do white/yellow and not only white)
Even Tymon said in a recent interview that 2 color is almost as good as fully color neutral, because you have to think less about the 6 possibilities and can focus more on better solutions of the 2 colors.

Since you know full 4LLL, I would suggest you learn full PLL then full OLL, which might sound like a lot to learn, but it's not bad if you just break it down into small sections and learn a couple cases each day and practice them throughout the day. I also HIGHLY recommend you do untimed solves where you don't time the solve or go for speed, but instead solving a step then looking at the cube to see what options you have until you figure out the best thing to do with the current knowledge you have. This will help you with efficiency and improve the decisions you make during speed solves.
