3d Printed Speedcube

You may be interested in checking out the twisty puzzles forum as well. Some people there may have 3d printing advice. They focus more on puzzle mods and the design of new puzzles over there. Some of the bigger names there (such as Oskar van Deventer or Tony Fischer) have created hundreds of puzzles. Its more for the sake of having a new puzzle than for the performance of the puzzle though. And that is not to say don't post here! Especially if its meant to be a speedcube. We'd like to see it. I don't recall. Speedsolving forum having an area for puzzle design many years ago when I was around. If it was there, it wasn't very active. Nice to see its picked up.
my knowledge of puzzle design is quite limited, so i may just view that forum rather than get involved in it. thx for the information though!

I have begun work on the center pieces. The thingiverse files were meant for a valk, but I am using Qiyi warrior hardware because of the substantial price difference considering the valk is discontinued. The center piece for the valk has a volcano shaped spring/ screw housing which went along with the also volcano shaped springs. Qiyi warrior uses straight springs which did not compliment the center pieces. I started up my cad software and modifed the cap pieces so that the volcano part was removed.

the piece on the left is the new one that I made/modified in Fusion 360 and the one is from the thingiverse file (link above):

This is cool, could you please tell from where did you learn 3d print designing
Also, I guess a black cube with red internals would look🔥
My 3d modeling skills are quite basic, but they do allow me to create certain models. Something like this speedcube is too complex for me at the moment which is why I used a thingivers file made by a creator much more skilled than I. My skills are self aquired through practice and youtube tutorials. In regard to your color selection, I do think black and red would look great together, but i fear that the darker red color may appear as black from the outside. I'm thinking if red internals are what i want, i should make the cube white in order to highlight the internal color.

The center pieces I made are not working. Corner cutting is not coming along well, but I can't figure out why. The cube is turning very fast though. I can almost one flick a U2. I have to order a couple of qiyi budget cubes from either amazon of SCS, and harvest their organs in order to make my creation live. Am still deciding on the color scheme.

Update: I have figured out the corner cutting issue but haven't solve it yet. The inner corners of the corner pieces are catching on the center. This isn't good. I may have to scrap the idea of having a cube that corner cuts well or reprint all the corners with modification from fusion 360. :(

Do you have proper springs?
Very fast turning with virtually no corner cutting was the case on all early speedcubes(or modified Rubiks) before springs came in.

If you try maybe using a brighter red color, and black outside, it could work well

I'm fairly certain that the problem is not the springs. they are quite effective in giving me the ability to do small corner cuts, but anything to big is obviously being prohibited by the corners catching on the centers.

Only thing left is to print center pieces. I’m supposed to use a qiyi core, so I will have to buy an extra one. Before buying one, I will try to print my own. This hasn’t exactly been done before, and I will try coding one in a 3D modeling software. View attachment 23473
why do I want to eat that cornerpiece so badly it looks like candy...

Also about the conical spring thing, the Qiyi Thunderclap V3 should have the hardware you need, and if you get it non magnetic it's eight bucks (10 for magnetic if you have a spare core you can transplant into it and actually make it usable). It has the same conical springs and a proper Qiyi core. The catching issue can likely be fixed with a tad of sanding as well as using Vaseline, not as lube, but to degrade any flash and rough surfaces into smooth areas to reduce catching a bit more. However, once it's smooth enough, thoroughly wipe out the Vaseline or it'll eat the plastic.

that corner piece does look tasty LOL. I don't think I will buy a thunderclap just to harvest the springs. I'm making due with some modifications that allow me to use springs from a $4 qiyi warrior.
