2018 Speedcubing Records Predictions

Now 2017 is almost over, let's make some predictions for 2018!

My guesses for WR (for NxN cubes and extra)

2x2 single- Same
2x2 average- Broken once or twice, 1.38-1.42 from Maciej or Lucas

3x3 single- 4.3-4.37 from Feliks, Bill, Max or Seung (or anyone from the top 15 cubers)
3x3 average- Same, but if broken, Feliks in late November or December with 5.76-5.79, and perhaps Bill if lucky

4x4 single- Broken twice with first 19.1x (Feliks, Max, or Sebastian) and second 18.7x by Sebastian.
4x4 average- 22.4x Broken twice by Sebastian or Max

5x5 single- Same, but if broken, 36-37 by Feliks.
5x5 average- 40-42 by Feliks, Max, or Seung.

6x6 single- Sub 1:10 by Feliks, Max, or Kevin
6x6 average- 1:15-1:20, by Feliks or Kevin

7x7 single- Sub 2, almost definitely. Kevin
7x7 average- Sub 2:10 by Feliks or Kevin

Pyraminx single- 1.15 by Drew
Pyraminx average- Sub-2 by Drew

Square-1 single- Sub 5.3 single

I keep being bad at this.

3x3: 4.30/5.80 Single seems like it can definitely be broken, the avg not so much.
2x2: 0.42/1.35 Single has stood for a while, and average is beatable by a lot of people.
4x4: 18.88/22.22 Underpredicted a lot last year (single same, avg 25). I wouldn't be surprised if it was unbeaten next year though.
5x5: 37.29/43.21 Avg is really good for Feliks (and anyone). But people improved a ton this year on 5x5 and they might keep going.
6x6: 1:12.50/1:22.10 Single prediction is sub-current UWR (AFAIK)
7x7: 1:59.44/2:06.06
3BLD: 16.96/21.69
FMC: 18/24 Single feels likely to stay the same but I may as well predict it to be beaten
OH: 6.88/10.03 Can't really tell with single
Feet: 18.03/24.88 People are getting too fast
Clock: 3.55/4.90 Sub 5 seems easy for Tairan
Mega: 29.93/34.63 Juan's been getting lots of really good singles recently but I'm not sure if he'll do it in comp
Pyra: 1.11/1.96 Drew wants his WR back and single is a bit slow
Skewb: 1.05/2.02
Sq1: 4.92/7.27 Single is slow (yes I think that partly because I have it), avg will be slow by the end of next year
4BLD: 1:28.90
5BLD: 3:47.50 That record's got to stand a while... right?
MBLD: 46/48 59:07 I've predicted this to be beaten since I started doing predictions. Maybe this year?

This year had new WRs in 26/33 events, last year was 24/33. Interestingly, there are currently more WRs from 2015 than 2016, because of some really good singles.

  • Single gets bumped down to 4.55. Max breaks it first, Feliks ties the record a month later, then Feliks beats it again at his next comp.
  • Average gets down to 5.79 by Feliks at a comp in South Africa.

• 2x2
  • 0.50 single by Blake Thompson because lol. WR will still stay at 0.49 until December of 2018 when it will get beaten with a 0.47.
  • Kevin improves his WR average early in the year, but Maciej will end the year with the record. He will get some insanely easy scrambles, and get a 1.2 average
• 4x4
  • Records galore by Sebastian! 18.24 single with a PLL skip and U2 AUF
  • Sebastian will unfortunately +2 out of a sub-21.5 average early in the year, but will get the WR at the end of the year with 21.23
• 5x5
  • Feliks will get WR single with a 36.52. Nahm and Max will also get sub-40 singles.
  • Feliks - 41.25 average. ‘Nuff said.
• 6x6
  • Kevin will be unable to gain his WR back, but will be able to get it at the beginning of 2019. WR single stays the same at 1:20.03.
  • Max takes WR average with 1:24.35, inching Feliks out by 0.2 seconds.
• 7x7
  • First sub-2 will happen this year by Kevin. Time will be 1:58.98 with an R-perm.
  • Feliks beats his own record down to 2:08.99
• OH
  • Record will stay at 6.88.
  • Average will be 9.98 by Max.
• BLD
  • Oh boy. This will be interesting. Jeff beats the WR first, followed by Daniel Lin. Jeff gets it back, and then Ishaan gets it with a misscramble. There will be confusion as to whether or not to count it, but it will count. The time will be 16.67.
  • 19.88 average by Angelo.
• Feet
  • Jimin will remain at the top and will take over single. He will get a 18.85.
  • Average gets improved by Jimin himself to a 23.39
• FMC
  • Not much to say year. Both records will stay the same. Maybe another person will get a 19 with an insane 16 to 3C. Nobody will beat the average.
• Pyra
  • Drew beats single with a 1.26
  • Drew gets WR average at Nats with a 1.97. (Reaction will be insane)
• Skewb
  • Jonatan takes the single down to 1.06.
  • Average will stay the same.
• Mega
  • Juan Pablo will get 2 more sub-30s. The WR single will be a 26.69 with a PLL skip.
  • Juan Pablo will break the average WR early in the year, but Yu Da-Hyun will snatch it at the end of the year with a 32.37
• Squan
  • Rowe breaks single with a 4.99.
  • Rowe also breaks average with a 7.66. CP skip on solve 2 and EP skip on solve 4.
• Clock
  • Nathaniel will keep the record at 3.73. 4 more sub-4s singles will happen. 1 by Wojciech, 1 by Evan, and 2 by Tairan. Tairan will also DNF a potential WR single.
  • Without a doubt, the average will be sub-5. Tairan will get a 4.88.
• 4BLD
  • Kaijun keeps the single.
• 5BLD
  • Kaijun keeps the single.
• MBLD
  • Another interesting event. Shivam will tie 41 points, but will just be over Maskow’s time. There will be a post on Speedsolving with exactly 24 people replying with something along the lines of “Aww, so close, you’ll get it next time!” Kamil also breaks the 40 point mark with exactly 40. He attempts 46, but time runs out while he is executing cube 44. The WR will still remain at 41 points by Maskow

Spoiler: New Cube Predictions

• MoYu becomes more and more obsolete. They will only produce good non-WCA puzzles, but QiYi will have produced puzzles better than MoYu in all events, but MoYu puzzles will still be used.
• No good clock comes out.
• A new mechanism for 2x2 comes out by GAN. They’re 2x2 will take over. It will feel similar to the Dayan, and a little better.
• QiYi makes a really good 5x5 called the WuLou, that will be factory magnetized, and still under 35 dollars. Yuxin will also create a really good 5x5 and that will compete with QiYi for best in the market. MoYu will make a bad 5x5. Someone will magnetize it, and it would still be bad. Everyone will forget about it, until someone figures out that the MoYu 5x5 will be really good if you switch the springs with Maru Soft Springs.
• X-Man creates the Volt v2.
• Moyu comes out with a smaller Pyraminx.
• Moyu makes two megaminxes, with the AoHun being one.
• Valk will release a 4x4. It will initially have issues with the mold, but then it will come back in October, and will be really good.
• Better 6x6 by YuXin that will be released on June 14.
• QiYi makes an insane 7x7.
• Skewb hardware stays the same.

• Mats Valk gets a sub-6 average, but he just barely misses WR
• Kian gets a sub-5 3x3 single.
• Sebastian gets 3 total sub-19s, with one being a 17 +2
• Nats podium will be Max, Drew, Bill
• Collin Burns starts competing seriously again. He beats his 5.25 with a 5.09
• Megaminx becomes a really popular event in Poland. With the top 20 people being sub-1.
• Erik gets another 7.08
• There will be a tie in results for at least one podium for an event at US Nationals.
• There will also be another WR tie time wise (this excludes events such as FMC and MBLD)

@thecubingwizard Do quote me on this: I'm going to take a wild guess that by the end of 2018 we'll look back on your predictions and be a bit creeped out by their accuracy

My PB/cubing predictions:

2x2: I'll learn and switch to HD and start doing the event again. I doubt I'll beat my 0.49 PB single for at least a few years.
3x3: I'll finish learning CLS and switch fully to M-CELL, and my single for which will be sub-10. My Ao5 PB with it will be 13.xx
MBLD: My PB will be 10 or more points
Other:
- I won't do any more 3x3x5 Fisher, but I'll keep its UWRs (I hope!)
- I'll start doing another non-WCA event and get a few UWRs for that too
- I'll develop some lubricant and make it better than the one I'm currently working on and maybe sell some!
- I'll get really really into some WCA event for a while not on this list, then abandon it completely or almost completely.
