The Battle of Wits and Whims II (Round 3 Announcement)

could i withdraw

Yes, I'll withdraw you.

If anyone new viewing this thread wants to compete and would complete their solves before Wednesday, I'll add you in.

If nobody responds by tomorrow, I'll just bump the competitor count to 11 and switch the second advantage spot from 12th to 11th. This is still the final placement position, so it wouldn't affect the latter set of placements very much. The 12th spot would more than likely be the 11th, and 11th more than likely 10th, etc.

As nobody new has expressed interest in filling the twelth spot following the last withdrawal, we will proceed with 11 competitors. As I mentioned, the 12th place advantage spot will simply be bumped up to 11th place. So 1st and 11th will have an advantage next round, and 5th and 8th will be eliminated.

@acrystal , please submit your 5x5 average by tomorrow. Once you submit, I'll release the final results for this round.

Hello everyone! The time has come to announce the results from round 1. Thank you all for submitting your results and following the directions (I know there were a lot of them)! This was a very close round, especially for the 5th place elimination spot. Without further ado, here are the final times and placements of all competitors:

Unfortunately, @ILCubing and @Jteddy have been eliminated; but as those of you who followed the first Battle of Wits and Whims may know, there may be future opportunities for eliminated competitors to return in a later round!

Our two lucky competitors with an advantage in round 2 are @AJT17 and @Abram Grimsley! I'll reveal what this advantage is when the details for round 2 are released.

On a side note, I'm shocked that nobody tried the DNF strategy, since I saw nearly half of you discussing it! That strategy could have been used, but in the case that four people used it and therefore all tied for 8th place, all of them would be eliminated. So it's a valid strategy, but carries the risk of shifting placements.

Best of luck to all our advancing competitors, and I'll begin designing the second round!

-Sincerely,
Clock_Enthusiast

Hello everyone! Congratulations on making round 2!

You: Wow, thanks Clock_Enthusiast! I am so honored and grateful for my continued participation in this grandiose tournament.

Round 2 Guidelines

The time has come to announce the details for round 2! As we work our way down to fewer competitors, the rounds should progress somewhat faster. This time around, only one competitor will be eliminated. I would like to have an even number of competitors in round 3, as I already have a challenge planned.

In this round, you will be completing a small relay of 3 events. The events will be selected as follows:

1. As @AJT17 and @Abram Grimsley earned an advantage last round, they will each be responsible for selecting one event each for the relay. Everyone will have these two events in their relay, and they must be events which everyone can do (so anything except for 6x6, 7x7, or PBQ events). These two events must also be different, so you cannot choose the same event.

2. YOU will each select your third event. This can be a duplicate of an event selected by our advantage-holders (if you have another one of these puzzles), or something else (this can include 6x6 or 7x7 if you wish, but no PBQ events).

The results will be evaluated based on how well you perform compared to your existing results, be those official WCA results or speedsolving.com weekly competition results (if you haven't competed officially). This format appears several times in the original Battle of Wits and Whims, so feel free to review that competition if you want an idea of how this works. If you haven't participated in a WCA competition or the speedsolving.com weekly competition, we can discuss alternatives including at-home PBs--it wouldn't be fair to limit events to those you've competed in if you still want to do them.

I will take your PR average for the three selected events, and add them together as a benchmark. Your goal is to get as close to this benchmark as possible--that includes going below or above; you want to be as close to this time as possible. I will measure results as a percent difference from the benchmark time, which is not represented as above or below, but as a distance from your benchmark time. Most of you can anticipate performing above the benchmark, as it is rare that competitors perform below it. In the case you find yourself finishing early, you must decide the best course of action to finish your attempt as close as possible to the benchmark time.

@AJT17 and @Abram Grimsley , please post in this thread which event you select for everyone. For everyone else, please either post your third event selection here or direct message me if you prefer--it really doesn't matter, as I'll post the final event selections as a spreadsheet for confirmation.

I suggest selecting your third event only after the advantage-holding competitors select the first two.

Once all events are decided, I will release the scrambles and an official deadline!

-Yours truly,
Clock_Enthusiast

So you'll consider if we competed officially in wca first before going to the ss results right?
I'm also going to have a competition in 4 days, so will you take the results before the comp or after?

I will choose OH as my event.
