I will begin constructing the final round officially. Thank you all so much for your patience. I haven't forgotten about this, and we will know very soon if @bldcuber314 or @AJT17 is our deserving champion.

I have an outline for how this will go, and I'll make a post tonight or tomorrow. Be prepared. This also involves past competitors, so I'll ping them here. You will be pinged again when the time comes, but this is a reminder that the final round involves you all in some capacity.

@bldcuber314 and @AJT17

Are you able to film an attempt of the final challenge at minimum as an unlisted (not public) YouTube vid or some other file? I have a scenario planned involving 25+ unique possible variables, so I need to know if it's possible to ensure they're done. It is also the Grand Final, so that would be ideal given the stakes.

Yeah, I could film but I can only do it on the weekends.

I can't, sorry if this complicates things.

Hello everyone!

Well here we are—finally moving onto the final of The Battle of Wits and Whims! After a very long hiatus, we will soon crown our champion, either @AJT17 or @bldcuber314 !

The final format will be a relay of randomly generated events in a randomized order, with randomly assigned rules broken down into three categories:

Advantages: A rule that provides competitors with a distinct, unique benefit during their relay.

Challenges: A rule that adds extra complexity to the relay.

Additional Rules: A more neutral selection of changes applied to the relay which don’t necessarily provide an advantage or disadvantage, but may influence the relay or final outcome.

Final Round Guidelines

  • As always, WCA rules apply, and this competition is conducted on honesty and trust—it’s all for fun and friendly competition. If you want to film your attempt, you may, but I understand that this isn’t always possible.

  • Your events will be completed IN THE ORDER they are listed during these attempts, and you have unlimited inspection time (unless certain puzzles must remain uninspected, per randomly assigned rules).

  • The winner will be decided using a set, individual standard time (calculated as the sum of WCA official PR averages in their respective assigned events). This will be measured as a percentage, so the finalist who performs the best relative to their standard time will be the champion!

  • Please either state your answers to assigned rules which involve a competitor’s decision either in this thread or through DM. I will send scrambles individually through DMs once this is finalized, and you will provide your results to me through DM as well. Please photograph your stackmat timer if you don’t film, just for concrete evidence in this final round.

Now, onto the individual rules and events of each finalist!

Advantages:
  • You get a world record scramble in one event (randomly selected)
  • You may perform two moves on one puzzle before your attempt. For clock, this means two non-simul moves. For Sqaure-1, I’ll consider this either one move on the upper face and one on the lower (e.g., (-3, 3)), OR one move plus a slice (e.g., (0,-3) / ).

Challenges:
  • If you go 1 minute above your target, you lose the match.
  • One event (besides 3x3 OH) must be performed one-handed (your choice)

Additional Rules:

  • If you finish 1 minute below your target, you win the match.
  • You will have a duplicate event in your lineup (randomly selected)

Current event list with rule-based modifications:
  1. 3x3
  2. 4x4
  3. Square-1
4. 5x5 4x4 (Randomly selected position #4)
5.
Skewb
6. 3x3 OH
7. 2x2 (OH)
8. Megaminx

Standard (based on WCA official PR averages): 3 minutes and 37.71 seconds

One non-OH event must be one-handed: 2x2 selected

@bldsolver314

Advantages:
  • You may switch out one event in your lineup to another of your choosing (duplicates are allowed)
  • You can ignore parity on one puzzle during your attempt (finished state may have parity as long as the rest is solved)
Challenges:
  • If the state of any puzzle warrants a +2 at the end of your attempt, you lose the match.
  • You must cover two puzzles after scrambling (without inspecting the puzzles), and only begin inspecting them when starting each event during your attempt (randomly selected)
Additional Rules:
  • If you solve 2/8 events one-handed (not counting 3x3 OH nor events affected by any OH-related challenge), 45 seconds will be subtracted from your final time.
  • You must complete your NxN events (besides 3x3 OH and 3x3 Blindfolded) largest à smallest (e.g., 5x5 à 4x4 à 3x3 à 2x2).

Current event list with rule-based modifications:

  1. Megaminx
  2. 5x5
  3. Pyraminx
  4. Skewb
  5. 3x3 4x4 *No Inspection (randomly generated)
  6. 4x4 3x3 *No Inspection (randomly generated)
  7. 3x3 OH
  8. 3x3 BLD

Standard (based on WCA official PR averages): 4 minutes and 31.78 seconds *Subject to change with event swap

One event may be switched out for another (duplicates allowed): Awaiting competitor decision

Two events (non-3x3 OH) may be performed one-handed for a time reduction: Awaiting competitor decision.

As previously mentioned, scrambles will be individually provided through DMs once competitor decisions for certain rules are selected. Scrambles on shared events (not including the WR scramble advantage) will remain the same between competitors for fairness and equal difficulty.

As always, please feel free to ask for clarification on any rules and regulations. Best of luck to our two talented finalists!

-Sincerely,
Clock_Enthusiast

I choose to do 2x2 as my non-OH event.
And will I know which scramble is the WR scramble, or will it be unknown before scrambling?

Is this the longest forum comp ever?

I don't have a square 1 rn because it's broken, do I have to use my event swap on that or can you switch it out

Since you don't have one to begin with--yes, it's only fair to switch it out for another and allow you to use your rule on events you have access to. I just randomly generated a new event out of the events you weren't assigned. Now, you'll have 5x5 instead of SQ-1. Once you select an event to swap out, I'll update your standard target time. Remember, this advantage allows you to have duplicate events if you want.

Also, I'll send out scrambles to both finalists once you select your event to swap out and indicate if you wish to use your Additional Rule #1. From there, I'll post a deadline (it won't be anything crazy--at least a few days), then we will await the reveal of our new champion.

Also for @AJT17, remember to individually DM me your results once completed! I don't believe that either of you guys would cheat, but it's just to maintain result secrecy as we've done in all previous rounds.

Hello everyone!

I have just sent the scrambles to @AJT17 and @bldcuber314 . So with that, the final round has officially begun!

Please DM me your results once you finish the relay, and if possible, please try to submit them by the end of this week (Saturday, 11:59 PM EST). If you need more time, just let me know.

Best of luck to you both! I'm very excited to see the final outcome of this competition!
